I hate carrying cash. I always feel I may lose it.

Re: Can you write tips via check?
I would not tip in check. It's an extra step that the vendor would have to take, and I figure if you're thanking them for their services, make it as easy as possible for them to enjoy the 'thank you'...
Make envelopes for each vendor you plan to tip. Your best man (or DOC) is supposed to carry them and take care of disbursing them.

No, tips should be in cash.
ETA - You and your FI shouldn't be carrying around the tip envelopes either. The best man (or someone else of your choosing) is in charge of the tip envelopes.

Tips should definitely be in cash. We organized them nicely in envelopes and then my dad held onto them and gave them out at the end of the night. I too was nervous about carrying that much cash around but its just one of those things ya gotta do.

Definitely agree with Kara! Delegate that responsibility to someone because you shouldn't have to be worrying about it!

Re: Can you write tips via check?
The night before the wedding, sit down w/your FI and write out all remaining balances on an envelope - which can be done in check (just make sure you check w/your vendors to confirm their final payment arrangements.)
On that same envelope, include the gratuity (18-20% for each vendor - in CASH.)
That way, you have everything organized in envelopes and can hand them off to your DOC, relative, Best Man, etc....
