Re: Canadian diamond?
Does it have anything to do with it not coming from Africa? I know there is an effort to get people to not buy diamonds from Africa because of the way the miners are treated...

Bingo. With a Canadian diamond you can be pretty certain that no one was killed for it.

Re: Canadian diamond?
I don't have a Canadian diamond but mine is from a conflict-free jeweler. I made sure FH asked before buying it!!!! It's the least we can do and worth a few extra bucks! We're going to the same guy for my wedding band as well.

Re: Canadian diamond?
they're called ice diamonds, I believe... and they're special becuase the canadians do not have slave labor and deplorable mining conditions.... also the canadian diamonds are not currency for terrorists or rebel leaders....
politics in the african diamond nations are No one wants to discuss it, but those pretty stones are the primary currency for rebels and al queda (tiny, valuable, not trackable, and easy to smuggle). Also the black market permits mining at gunpoint, and the burning and raping of entire villages....
DeBeers claims they have tracking methods to ensure the stones they supply aren't black market diamonds, but alas, their system is still easy to circumvent and infiltrate...

Re: Canadian diamond?
This post just reminded me that everyone should go and watch the academy award nominated movie The Blood Diamond with leonardo di caprio. Its on demand now. This entire post is exactly what that movie is about. It shows how diamonds are mined in war zones in South Africa and how many innocent young boys and men are killed and brainwashed into mining. Its one of the most sadest movies ive ever seen. This film made a pretty tremendous impact, actually whats interesting is that after that movie was realeased De Beers insisted that the film reduced public demand for diamonds and their sales went down.

Ihaven't seent hat movie yet, but I saw a documentary about it where some guy pretty much went undercover to film it and see how easy it would be to smuggle diamonds across the bordering african countries and what not. I forget the name of it but it was really good and the guy who did it helped with Blood Diamonds aswell. If I saw that movie before getting my ering or wedding band, I definitely would have made sure they were canadian diamonds...or I would have gotten a different stone like sapphire or something...its really sad what goes on in some of those African countries, and its even more sad how the diamond traders and industry finds it so easy to turn a blind eye to it. I'll post the name if I can remember.

Re: Canadian diamond?
'Blood Diamond' takes place in Sierra Leone and Liberia, NOT South Africa.
Blood diamonds account for about 3% of diamonds today, but that fact isnt accurate IMO. You never know what DeBeers has stored away.
Canadian diamonds are from non-DeBeers owned mines. DeBeers mines are mainly in Southern Africa. DeBeers says that they do not have conflict diamonds (which we don't exactly know). Even if they do not, the mining conditions are still poor for the workers. I have a Canadian diamond and made sure of this for this reason. I cant stand DeBeers and their marketing strategies. Although, I did read somewhere that Canadian mines are being bought by DeBeers
I've read that Canada has an almost 100% wonderful track record and strict environmental protection laws. The money from Canadian diamonds goes to the Canadian economy. Unlike DeBeers, which takes a natural resource from Africa and none of the profits go into those countries economies.
