My mom had surgery on Monday and has had major and minor complications everyday since then. The doctor is optimistic that she might come home Sunday or Monday if all goes well from here. I get a call tonight from my MOH telling me that she hates to ruin the surprise but my shower is this Saturday.
Now I have two choices- (1) cancel the shower -or- (2) keep the shower as scheduled.
MOH told me she arranged to have someone videotape so that my mom can watch it afterwards. She wants to have it this weekend since she won't be able to come up again until the wedding (she lives in VA, is 6 months prego and her baby shower is this weekend as well).
My other BM want to cancel and FH wants to cancel. I know that I can't enjoy it worrying about mom, knowing that she was alone in the hospital and I would be upset and missing her terribly. I am her only child so there is no other chance to attend her daughters shower.
I've made my decision but as a guest, how would you feel to be called the night before to be told it was canceled?

As a guest I would totally understand, given the situation. The people attending your shower are people who love you, so they will understand that you want your Mom there.
PS: lot sof

I agree. If having your Mom there is important to you, as it should be, then they'll understand.

Sweetie, I think you should have it...seriously...I think the last thing that you r mom would want for you is to cancel the shower. You dont have to do anything big, just a nice get together with the ladies who care about you. Im sure you can use this event just to sort of set back and relax a little bit...its not like its an all day affair. Take pictures or the videotape idea is great to have your mom involved. I think you should have it sweetie.

You've made your decision not have it, and I think it's a good one.
Given the situation, if anyone had a problem with that... well, that would show a lack of character on their part.
Your mom's health is number one, in my book.

I would have to agree...perhaps it can be resched. was your moms health has improved...you still have about 6 weeks..
maybe you can have it at home, where she won't have to go out, but can still be a part of it, once she is out of the hospital.

I agree! Your mom should be there, and can't miss it for 2 days! Your guests will understand. Can't you 'postpone' it... even if it ends up being held in someone's house?

As a guest, I would totally understand. Your feelings are more important and your Mom should be there and as a guest I would tell you that you made the right decision.

I think you should cancel it. I'm a mom and would want to be there for my daughters shower. A speedy recovery for mom, and hope everything works out for you!!

Stef, I'm sorry to hear about your dilemma, but I'm also relieved to hear that your mom made it through surgery.
If you're already having second thoughts about the shower, then I think YOU know what you should do. Considering the situation, I think everyone would completely understand if you canceled or postponed your shower. Even the restaurant/hall/where ever it was scheduled should be flexible (one would hope!).

this sounds like a good option. I agree. I would be so sad if my mom couldn't be at my shower, she put so much work into it.......

I would totally understand if I was a guest. You have to do what you feel is best. If your guests don't understand it, then it's their problem. Best of luck and good wishes for your mom!

As a guest, of course I would totally understand! And since you are an only child, it definitly makes sense to cancel. But how does your mom feel about it? This is also your only chance to have a shower (unless your MOH can work something else out) I don't know how many people you are having (and this may sound crazy) but what about at least opening the gifts at the hospital w/ your mom, like in the visiting area, and then going out to eat or doing whatever was planned? Just an idea!
