So we have FIVE cancellations so far! And that doesn't count no shows, which I'm expecting. So I'm running around asking people at work (where I invited no one) and most can't make it. Asking people if they want to bring dates, etc.
Note to everyone that I didn't heed - book for less people than you actually need - people will cancel.

You are so right....
I picked a room that has 120 miminum. I wished I would have left it at 100 min. for a room. Now, I will end up having to invite maybe 150 pp. Bec. I know people won't show up..or..they won't....make it etc......

Ok, I know this is going to sound like a really dumb question, but other than paying more $$ per person what are the penalties for have less than your minimum??

I don't think there are any, except that you have to pay for your minimum, but I'm not 100% certain.

We had about 3 or 4 cancellations last minute...one was one of our GM who broke his leg two days before and had to have surgery. That was a big disappointment.
I understand how you feel...we were disappointed getting these calls a few days before....its the last thing you want days before your big day...but in the end we really didnt think about it.

I had about 10 cancellations the week before the wedding. My hall used the money to give me extras, such as shrimp at the cocktail hour, and extra dessert on the table etc so I wouldn't lose out on anything.

I don't think there's any penalty except that you still have to pay for the people, just like when you don't make your minimum you still have to pay.
I think that's a great Karen had - since you are still paying your hall the money, see if they will apply it to some extras.

I have heard to always give your hall a few less that your actually headcount b/c you will have 'no shows'...

For me, the worse part about getting cancellations will be to find out why... in your case, it's Memorial Weekend. I would wonder if the cancellations were due to the holiday, because I know how inconsiderate people can be!
But thanks for the tip... I will give my head count a couple less than that actual responses.
