Ok Im thinking of doing something rash and changing my photographer...
We already gave him a deposit plus extra. Would he give back the extra and keep the deposit or keep all of it?

As a photographer, I would personally refund the extra. But if you gave extra because payments were due, like my RH charges payments as time goes on, I think that's common, I would not refund those.
For example, my dj's told me I could leave whatever I wanted as a deposit, $100, $200...I left $500, if I was going to cancel I'd ask for the remaining $300-$400 back.

I agree, check your contract and see what it says. Personally I think he should give back the extra $$ unless a payment was due GL!!

I just switched mine-- the reason was because we were not getting return phone calls and had caught him in multiple lies. After speaking with him, he said he would retun ur deposit.. still haven't seen in, but hoping it arrives soon:(

My photographer's policy was that he would return deposits within 30 days (I think). When we changed the date, he said he would keep the money paid as a credit towards other events, but would not refund any of it because the wedding was only 3 months away from the original date. I wouldn't count on getting it back.

You definately need to read over your contract. Most photographers that I seen stated on the contract that the deposit is non-refundable. I don't think they will give you the money unless it's a an all inclusive package like Wedding World where you can use some other service if you don't want to loose your money all together but I could be wrong maybe your photographer is different. Sometimes if you feel you need to change your photographers and you have a bad vibe I would totally do it in a heartbeat. Even if it meant losing my deposit.
