What does everyone think of having a large candle inserted into the middle of the centerpiece? Is it a nice touch or should I just stick with a basic arrangement & have tea lights scattered on the table?

I am having a candle put into the center. Not a large one though. Just a thin pillar candle right in the middle.

I would have to see what you mean by LARGE candle...I like more candles as opposed to one large one but that's JMO.

You could always do both. I'm having 3 pillar candles in the middle...sort of arranged pyramid style since my tables are oval and my centerpeices long. Then I'm also putting votives on the table on the long ends. I like mood lighting

I meant a candle similar to this but with a larger arrangement of flowers than the one pictured
When I went to finalize my menu last weekend, the room at CH was set up for a wedding. The CP was a large pillar candle with 10 small floral potted plants with ribbon around them and a tag w/cute saying. This was meant to be the favor for each guest. I was really nice.
