Re: Canister vs. Upright Vaccuums
It depends if you ahve a lot of floors or carpets. We have both. The canister for the hardwood, tile and linoleum floors and the stairs and the upright for the carpet. When FH was in a small dorm apartment a dthe only carpet was not at all deep, he just used a canister. i think the uprights seem to be a lot more powerful on carpets because they have those spinning brushes. etc.

Consumer reports says that they are both good for all types of floors. The one thing that they say to take into consideration is the weight if you have stairs in your house.

Re: Canister vs. Upright Vaccuums
i have a canister and hate it. acutally it is an expensive eletrolox that was my mothers I have a high ranch and it is a pain in the neck carrying all the parts around the house... I end up unplugging and plugging the freaking thing like a million times and i feel like i am dragging a small kid behind me with the canister, I feel like it is alway banging into the walls etc. Meantime growing up we had canisters in my mom's levitt house and i never saw a problem with it.
I am actually thinking of getting that Flip it i think bissell puts it out one side is for hard floors and the other side is for rugs.

Re: Canister vs. Upright Vaccuums
I prefer canister vacs. They have more functionality than uprights. The power nozzle is more powerful than uprights (they have the spinning brushes too). My vac has the large power nozzle for carpets and it has a small power nozzle for stairs, chairs, etc. It has the hardfloor attachment, the crevice tool and the dust brush. I also prefer vacs with bags! They don't fill up as quickly as the bagless type and when it's full, you toss it - no bothersome 'cup' that needs to be cleaned!

Re: Canister vs. Upright Vaccuums
I had an eureka upright that I hated. My parents just bought me a kenmore canister and it is so much better. No comparison. They also consulted consumers and they rated it the highest.

Re: Canister vs. Upright Vaccuums
I used to have a canister and I agree with the other poster about it dragging and banging into things.
I now have an upright and its so much easier. It has settings for floor and carpet, and I think it works really well.

I have a Kenmore canister that's 15 years old and it' great. It's probably not as great as it was when it was new...but so far so good!

Re: Canister vs. Upright Vaccuums
I like the cansiter vacuums much better...I just feel that with an upright...getting it to go into the corners and tight spaces is a pain in the arse...maybe its just because my mom has always had canisters and thats what I got use too...my dream is to have central Vac...
