I used to get them all the time. Ambesol works for alittle while. I would also rinse my mouth with water and peroxide which helped to clean it out and numbed it as well. I have found since using listerine everyday that I have cut back on getting the sores. Hope you feel better soon.

My doctor also told me to apply ice to it, then take it off and apply heat to it (like using a hot towel). I don't know if it works but it seemed to think it did.

I use to get them...the good news they stopped. My daughter gets them and now there is something over the counter for them. I believe it is called Canker. Not sure though. I heard it works.

I get them also --- I use adn oral cleanser... You can buy it in any drug store... I buy the store brand -- I forget what the brand name is -- but it is a hydrogen perioxide cleanser-- It makes them go away really fast!

They are usually caused by a Lysine deficiency. Lysine is an essential amino acid. In other words your body needs it but can not manufacture it on it's own. So pick some up and continue to take it.

LIW is right. Lynsine works. I used to get canker sores all the time and as soon as I would feel a sore coming on I would take a lynsine pill and it would disappear.

whiskey : -)
numbs it right up!
or anbesol
I got them when I was a teenager. But not in years.
From a website: Mouthrinses containing the antibiotic tetracycline may reduce the unpleasant symptoms of canker sores and speed healing by preventing bacterial infections in the sores.
If you have canker sores, avoid abrasive foods such as potato chips that can stick in the cheek or gum and aggravate the sores. Take care when brushing your teeth not to stab the gums or cheek with a toothbrush bristle. Avoid acidic and spicy foods. Canker sores are not contagious, so patients do not have a worry about spreading them to other people
If they happen alot, you should see a doctor and have a blood test done to see if you are allergic to something or vitamin deficiency.

Re: Canker Soars
Rembrandt makes a toothpaste that does not contain SLS (sodium laurel sulfate, which is in many oral care products); SLS has been shown to be correlated with canker sores. I used to get them all the time, but the frequency has decreased (tho' not to zero) since I started using the toothpaste. It's got a purple band on the box and is advertised to help canker sore sufferers.

I just saw the commercial for Rembrant. They specifically says it prevents cold sores.

one other bit of advice is to stop using your lipstick/chap sticks when you get a canker sore. you'll continue to spread the sores or have them reoocur

You are thinking of cold sores. Canker sores aren't contagious
