Re: canoodle

I do not think I have ever said that word. It is a weird word - I get distracted by noodle.

I hate the word Tomfoolery or is that two words?

Re: canoodle

I like tomfoolery because it's kind of victorian. Which makes it weirdly proper.

I think that tabloids invented the word canoodle. I hate it. Like I hate the P word.

tomfoolery is fun.

canoodle is just stupid.

I agree with Suz...what's with the noodle...

if it's still a 'noodle' the 'canoodling' must not be that exciting....

Re: canoodle

A likely source for canoodle is the German knudeln 'to cuddle'

But that's kind of Victorian, too. And for some reason that's excusable to me.

I can't say for sure, but I know it involves a LOT of rigorous keegle excercising. And an italian stallion.

Re: canoodle

Found this on the web because I am a dork.

I don't like the word either...

Canoodle is indeed a great word to say out loud. It means 'to hug and kiss; pet; make love (in the original sense)'.

The earliest example of canoodle that is known is from 1859, when it is found in the works of a British journalist who claims that the word is an Americanism. The word occurs sporadically for another hundred years or so, but became very popular in the 1970s.

The origin of the word depends strongly on whether or not the word truly is an Americanism. A likely source for canoodle is the German knudeln 'to cuddle'. This etymon would be possible if canoodle is American, but it is very unlikely if the word is British.

Despite the fact that the earliest example claims an American origin, the author of that passage was British and had no real familiarity with American English. Most of the other early examples are also from British authors, or in one case an American author who had been living in England for many years. Canoodle seems to be more common in British English until rather recently.

If canoodle is not from German knudeln, no other likely source suggests itself. The English Dialect Dictionary records 'canoodle' from the English county of Somerset, meaning 'donkey', and the EDD notes that the word is 'used also figuratively of one who makes love foolishly.' The connection between donkeys and foolish behavior is well established, but this still seems like an extremely tenuous link to explain this word. And of course we still don't know where canoodle 'donkey' comes from.

Still, I say you should just go ahead and use it.

Re: canoodle

I've never used it. It doesn't really go with my vocabulary.

I don't think I've ever used tomfoolery either. It's just not me.

Call it what it is. Stop making up names. Just use the words that we already have!!

Canoodle is a bit weird and I only see it used by gossip magazines.

Tomfoolery, however, I can do--it makes me laugh.

Since you haven't been spending much time outside of your preggo land lately, I think they are only your panties. Kara's panties are otherwise occupied
