It will be fun. The only problem is Rome will be crowded and many if not all of the Vatican will be closed to visitors. They hold the conclave in the Sistine Chapel so at least that will be closed off to visitors.
I hope it doesn't interfere with your plans

Are you going on a tour or did you plan your trip on your own? We're in the process of planning and fh and I are debating this a bit...

We're so excited. We are going all over Italy. We planned our HM around the Formula 1 Race in Italy. We planned (actually mom the travel agent planned) the whole thing. We'll be starting off in Milan and then heading south stopping in Tuscany, Rome, Florence and then Venice. We are not doing any group tours. Should be an experience. I'm a little concerned with the crime in Rome especially if the crowds are going to be crazy. My MIL says try not to look so American

I was very anxious about crime in Rome but it wasn't bad. When I was there (in 2001) we were told to look out for people who will come behind you and snip the straps of your purse. But my mom bought me a small canvas messenger-style purse and sewed a length of chain into the strap. It made me feel more secure. I also kept my passport, ccs and most of my money in one of those money belt things under my shorts. Just be alert and you should be ok.

I was in Rome in 2001 too. Things seemed fine although I too was concerned about crime there. I remember the subway trains looked so nasty with all the graffiti all over them. It reminded me of the days when the trains in NYC had graffiti all over them.
