We got an envelope for the captain. What is he and what does he do? What kind of tip does he get?

My GH is a captain at Crest Hollow. A captain is the manager under the matre'd. They basically see that everything you requested is being taking care of (linen colors, set up cocktail hour and vianesse, any special requests like wine on tables). Some RHs will alot the captain a small cut of the matre'd tip so you may not need to tip him. Strangely, when I mentioned to FH that we will need to tip our captain and he said we do not- so that is from the horses mouth- no tip needed. I still think I will give our captain something if he goes above and beyone- like with any service.
PS- we are getting married at the Watermill, a Scotto... So I'm not absolutely sure how they work tips. You can ask your BM, but they may tell you a figure that is way overtipping. We asked ours about the matre'd tip and it was WAY more than the matre'ds at CHCC told FH they would expect.

i had a Captin at my wedding....honestly he did nothing. or nothing that we saw! I asked my BM what he does..he said he runs the room and kitchen when the BM is busy. So maybe he did...but I only recall him coming over to us 1 time the whole night. He seemed like a nice guy..did his job---or so I think! LOL So we gave him 100$

I got this also and was suprised. In the end I gave him $100.00. At first I got mad because they never told me about this. But he helped me a few times during the night I saw him and also he helped to take all my stuff and I had alot of stuff back over to my room at the hotel with my BA. I carried extra cash that night well my bestman had it and as I felt people deserved it I gave extra out.
