Re: carbs v. protein v. calories v. fats
If you *really* want help, I'm all about the POINTS. As you can see in my response to the 'What size pants?' thread, I'm down from a big 16 to a 10.
Don't cut out carbs completely - it's unhealthy and can hurt you *especially* if you have heart disease in your family. Protein is nearly always good. Specifically LEAN protein. Watch your caloric and fat intake.
There - there's the whole secret sans points.
I feel the need to either call you 'Lunchbox' or 'Tubby B!tch' with that avatar, you know.

I agree on POINTs. Points monitor allof the above, you're blancing fiber intake with fat and calories. It works vry well and it's HEALTHY and you eat what you want. I've been very succesful with points and I don't know ANYONE who didn't lose weight with points. I have to get back on it. I just have to will power these days!
I think low carb is REALLY unhealthy. Your body needs carbs, too high protein causes ketosis, and also generally with protein comes cholesterol and fat. I mean it sounds great, you can lose weight eating bacon, eggs and cheese everyday, all the cheeseburgers you want...but eventually it can caus e aserious heart problem! Also you can't go on low carbing forever, and when you go back to carbs a lot of times you'll blow up.
I'm not a nutritionist, but I think that whatever diet you choose, it's best to eat a BALANCED diet from all of the food groups. The ADA just increased the food pyramid to include I think 12 servings of grains!!!
I think along with points, the sugarbusters concept is a good one. Just eating whole grain bread and cereal instead of white bread and avoiding processed sugars and other foods high in sugar.
I think overall points encompasses all of this, because sure you can eat candy...but pretty soon it'll eat up all of your points for the day, so you really do train yourself to eat healthier. The first few days it's hard ot get used to, but after that, you really learn how to eat and you can be full on fewer and fewer points, because you learn which foods give you more bang for your buck, so to speak.

Nah. I'm just overly verbose.
But I want to add that POINTS actually does incorporat ethe whooe suagr busters concept in another way,. The more fiber something has (whole wheat has more fiber than white bread for example), the fewer points it is, so you're rewarded in that way for eating things that are whole grain and healthier for you. You are NOT rewarded for empt calories, though you do have flex points to go nuts if you want to!

The problem with points is that it doesn't teach you how to eat healthily. Everything has a point value, so you can eat anything you want - I saw that someone on SLim Down is asking how many points are in a Linzer Tart. You end up using up a lot of points on those kinds of foods and then you don't have enough left over to get the nutrition you really need. And then lots of people save up their points so that they can eat a really big dinner. Also not healthy!
If you think of your body as a car, your stomach is the fuel tank. You can't overfill and not expect the gas to fall all over the floor. Likewise, you can't overeat in one sitting - your body will find a place to store the extra and it turns into fat. It makes much more sense to eat smaller, more frequent meals, each consisting of a portion of protein, a portion of carbohydrates and some veggies. BAsically, your body uses it up in the period of time between your meals.

I've been on Atkins for 3 weeks and I've lost 14lbs so I say no carbs. And it's the easiest diet because you can eat alot.

Re: carbs v. protein v. calories v. fats
I disagree, Farah.
My leader back on LI is REALLY BIG on the nutrition portion of the Points program. She always says that you must use your daily points on healthy, nutritious food, and if you want Ben and Jerry's, it comes out of the 35 allowance points, regardless of whether or not you have half your daily points left. If someone were to actually read the book and not try to rewrite it to suit them, they'd see that too.
If you're on WW long enough even without paying attention to the nutrition part, you start to learn exactly what Marymoon was talking about - you need to eat the lower points (Healthier) food to get through the day without starving. I've been on it for a year and a half, and I know. Whether or not I actually DO it is another story.

The best way to lose weight AND be healthy is to have good carbs and good fats - keeping the bad carbs and bad fats to zero or minimum.
Brown Rice, Sweet Potatoes, Whole Grains ... etc ...
Protien is key but not to over do it - and drink a lot of water.

Exactly. If you eat a linzer tart or something and you take it out of your points allowance, you're going to be HUNGRY, so you leanr not to do that,
Like yu can eat 2 slices of pizza for dinner 18 pts, but you better plan on starving for the rest of the day..so I think it def. does train you. If all you eat is junk food, you're going to be pretty hungry, plus witht eh fiber thing you're rewarded for eating veggies and whole grains.
I'm a big fan of points...yes big, because I completely fell off the program! LOL...my fh would give me food that was so fattening and then say 'no points!'..I'm so weak...and that was the end of my points adventure, but I think I'll start again today!

I don't know if any of you read redbook, but they had an article about this. If you want I can post it for you. In the end...they said you have to take all this into consideration and just be aware of portion control.

I agree with this. If you actually read all of the WW material and do what they suggest, you are eating a balanced diet. The problem is that many people do just count points and expect to lose weight without really looking at the whole program. I had a friend who lost weight on Atkins say that many people do the same on that program. They just eat more protein and cut out carbs without really reading any of the books or finding out how to truly follow the program.
I agree with Farah, though, that you have to eat a balanced diet and cut out a lot of the junk, with whatever diet you follow, if you want to see results.
