Career in Real Estate

Career in Real Estate

I'm thinking of a career change so I can leave the city and work in Suffolk County. Real estate appeals to me, but I don't know how reliable it is, income-wise. Does anyone know how much a real estate broker makes per year?

I Looked into this briefly also.
It totally depends on how motivated you are. how the market is, how many hours you devote, how you market yourself, keep on top of whats out there to be sold, etc, etc.

Theres no set 'salary'. you sell, you make money, you dont sell, you dont make money.

To start out, theres an exam you need to take, and the total costs to start out are in the $1,000 range.

Im a big people person, and although its a 'people person' job, as far as showing homes, the 'working independently' part of it is not me. I need to always be in the midst of people.. (maybe i'll change my mind on that after a year or 2 of teaching!)

Lots of luck to you !

It's not as glamorous as it may sound.. you have to truly be motivated.. it's def a who re business and not easy.. you do not get a base salary and when you start out, you don't make that much b/c you most companies take a 50% split of your commission check PLUS taxes.. unless you are lucky enough to start out with someone who you know and can give you a better deal.

You truly have to market yourself, in order to make money. whether it be knocking on doors, cold calling, whatever.. it's a tough business.

good luck in whatever you decide.. =)

I agree w/ commercial being more lucrative, although, it never appealed to me. I've done a few store/restaurant deals, but I always preferred residential. The hours are definitely better than residential - not too many Sunday open houses on stores.

I just left my job in RE on June 12th (RAH!!! ) and I'm not going back!!!! 8 1/2 years and I've hit my limit. When the market's bad, it's REALLY bad (same goes for when it's good ) Now I just need to figure out what I want to be when I grow up!!!

The competition is stronger than ever in the field now given the job market. It's very easy to get licensed and to have someone sponsor you, but, there are 10+ agents for every 1 listing.

Good luck!!
