Caribbean people in the room, or anyone marrying someone from the Caribbean
What are you doing about your food situation. My catering does not really have a selection of Caribbean dishes. My mother said someone asked her if there was going to be roti at the wedding??????? I think this is highly ridiculous considering they could have roti any damn day, but I do not want disgruntled guests. How did/are you handling this?

FI really wanted caribbean food at the wedding-he wants caribbean food everyday. We compromised-none at the wedding but we'll have caribbean food at the RD and psot wedding bbq/brunch. We will have black cake in boxes for our guests

If the hall offers it, then they do, but most don't, unless they cater to West Indian clients. My grandma says that Jamaicans eat anything, don't worry about it. You can ask the hall if they can make something special for you, or pick things like Snapper for your entree or something. And have the black cake. But if you hall didn't offer it as a choice when you booked, you can't count on them offering it now. Antuns in Queens and Glen Terrace are the only places I've seen that do.

Don't worry about it. Most people realize that when you have a wedding at a hall that it won't be Caribbean food. Its not in the backyard or the church basement, its at a catering hall. They can live without roti for one day. Some halls can do one dish for the cocktail hour, it doesn't hurt to ask. Like everything else, you can't please everyone.

My aunt is also getting married in July and is NOT catering.....downgrading the food. But honestly do I want to eat rice and peas on my wedding day? Something I can eat home all the time. NO. So it's true you can't please everyone and whoever is not satisfied should just stay home. Don't go out of your way.

People will get over it. I had my wedding at coral house and they were able to provide some west indian dishes at the cock tail hour. However I think once people realize its catered you will not have caribbean food.

The only person who will not really enjoy the food is my dad. If it's not Haitian food he will find something wrong with it.
I can just imagine him going home after the reception to ask my mom if they had any rice and beans in the fridge.
Like everyone said, I think people will be OK. It's a nice change to eat something different that you don't eat every day.

yes once they see that it is catered, they will know that there is no carib. food. I am having the black cake and the closest they will get to the caribbean is that I told my DJ he has to be ON POINT with the music. NO dollar wine PLEASE otherwise my family will eat him for their dinner

I mean the nerve of these damn people. ONE DAMN DAY, you eat roti all the damn time. But I can hear the remarks now' O you made sure kenny's(FH) family had something nice to eat' What the hell they expect me to do. I am not going to have my wedding at some tacky place just so they can have roti. Well I am so annoyed I could blow my top. I will all of them to eat before they get there because there will be NO ROTI.

Re: Caribbean people in the room, or anyone marrying someone from the Caribbean
At first, I wanted to go to a place that offered West Indian food, but like you said we eat roti, curry, cook-up, pepperpot, etc all the time!!! Besides, I don't think a catering hall is going to cook it to taste anything like what your family or future family is used to eating- so then what's the point?- so basically I am staying away from picking the curry for cocktail hour- because I know all my GT massive will have something to say!
It does not hurt to try something different for a day!!! It's your day, choose what you think is appropriate and that people will enjoy, but know that you can't please everyone.
Anyway, I do agree, however, that a wedding would not be a wedding- at least in my family without the black cake!!! So that- they will get!
Okay, let me get off this board and go warm up the curry and roti I brought for lunch today- left overs from superbowl party- I tell you we West Indians!

They can always have roti and cook up, etc for the RD.We are having it at the FH mom's house. You know that WE can turn anything into a full fledged FETE. so they can bring the eats and the carib, mauby and sorrell then

CB our hall does do ethnic foods and since part of FH's side is from Aruba, we might do some ox tail or something else. I don't eat meat so I have never had these things. We are also going to have some paella for both our sides and maybe some other spanish type foods but we aren't making it a point to do so. We do have the option.
These people will have to deal with it if you have the roti or not. Its one night out and you really can't please anybody so tell them to get over it.
