Caring for Our Parents

Caring for Our Parents

I was just on the phone with my mom. She doesn't live far away but she works crazy hours (she's a nurse supervisor and often works weekends and night shifts) so I don't see her as much as I'd like to. It worries me that she works so hard, but she has to to support herself. Well, and she says she likes it, but I think she is just telling me that.

I was daydreaming that maybe in about 10 years we could have a house with room for her. (My parents are divorced and my mom lives alone now, in an apt. She was royally scre$^ by my dad and left with nothing).

I know this would be a strain on my marriage but I love my mom so much and want her to have some comfort in life. I think my DH would understand, but to be honest, if the situation was turned around, I would NOT want his mom to live with us permanently.

Do you guys ever think about your parents aging and how they will live? Who will care for them? How it will affect your marriage?

Edited for bad spelling!

I do think about it--my mom is alone, and I know I could never have her live with me and DH because it would be too much of a strain on our marriage...I really hope I will always live close enough to take care of her when she needs me...

Some couples actually do better when they are together--YET SEPERATE-- with their parents...

I think if you had an apartment with a seperate entrance it would be much more comfortable. It also depends on the personality of your mother.. she seems really sweet, but if shes got more of an invasive 'MIL' personality.. I would vote HECK no...

After you have kids, mom is great to be close... you find yourself asking a billion questions, you never thought youd ask....

I really think that if you feel so strongly you should talk to DH now and get his opinion for the future.

My parents live close. Ten minutes away, and that, IMHO is close enough.
