Re: Carlyle and a DJ
in my opinion i dont think a dj belongs at the carlyle. we looked at the caryle and loved its class and elegance and i think a band would fit in better.

Re: Carlyle and a DJ
I'm having my wedding at OHEKA and we have a DJ, as do many of the brides at OHEKA. Jenny11.9, janette, etc. There are many weddings I have seen that the band made the wedding cheesy rather than elegant. Even instances where the singer kept calling the bride the wrong name after being corrected by the FOB and the Matrie D -and if that isn't the opposite of elegant.... (this was a wedding at another mansion on Long Island, the name escapes me right now)
In any case, if you decide to go with a DJ, you should look into ones that have already played the Carlyle so you know they are used to the room and have played other 'elegant' weddings there. We are using Music by Micheal, but I have heard great things about Spin Around Sound which has played at OHEKA a lot. IF you get a good dj that plays the right music then there is no question of class, at least you know the music will be good rather than taking a risk with a band as long as you don't pick a cheesed out dj which is why I suggested those above.

Re: Carlyle and a DJ
I had my wedding at the Carlyle AND had a DJ and I thought it worked out beautifully. I think the DJ fit in just fine. I used Kevin from Absolute Entertainment and he did a great job. DJ's don't have to be 'cheesy' and are a perfectly viable, and oftentimes much more afordable, option.

Re: Carlyle and a DJ
I had my wedding there and I had a band. In my opinion the Carlyle has classic elegance. And when I think of classic elegance, I do not think of DJs. Then again, I am biased- I was raised around musicians and I would NEVER, EVER get a DJ... EVER. I think a band brings something to the reception that a DJ can't. Then again, the only weddings I have ever been to (about 6 of them) had the WORST DJs- so I'm starting to think I'll never hear one I like.
I think that you can hear a DJ anytime... they have DJs at anniversary parties, at christenings, etc... I wanted to have my wedding be something above and beyond those types of events.
Also- your guests probably never get to hear live music either. All the guests at my wedding were so appreciative of our band (we had a 12 piece- which was excessive).. but they were all like, 'Oh man- we've never been to a wedding that had live music like that'
Yes, you can have a bad band, but if you do your research, I'm sure you won't.

Re: Carlyle and a DJ
Hi fellow Carlyle brides! I am having the same DJ or band issue. I would LOVE a band BUT money is an object so... I was wondering if anyone knew (or has opinions about) Tommy Tunes and whether or not he is classy enough to play at Caryle? I've read some reviews but none from the Carlyle...... I will also call the DJs mentioned above. Thanks for the info!
Just out of curiousity, what is the least amount of money I could expect to pay for a band if we could go that route?

Re: Carlyle and a DJ
my friend's wedding was there a few years ago and she had a DJ. It did not take away from the place at all.

I think you can find affordable bands for between $5-6K? You just need to look around. I just think that the band brings more to the party in terms of atmosphere and mood. I personally think the three most important things are 1) company- do you have good guests! 2) food, 3) the music.. everything else I think is ancillary.

Re: Carlyle and a DJ
I'm getting married there next year and I chose to have a DJ. I have to save money somewhere!!! I also had a problem with needing someone who could play Italian music as well.

Hi Carlyle girls! Have any of you investigated nearby hotel prices? I know the Carlyle recommends Melville Marriot and the Huntington Hilton but is there anything closer and preferrably more affordable?
Chicagogal - which DJ did you choose?

Re: Carlyle and a DJ
Hi - we booked at the Melville Marriott (but not the Huntington Hilton - have heard many negative things about them), Hampton Inn, and Best Western Woodbury. We might add places, but not sure...
