Cars - once married?!

Cars - once married?!

I hope this doesn't sound weird, but driving home from work today I realized, my car is going to like, become FH's car, right?

He has a stick shift, I don't drive stick. I lease a Honda Accord, he has a bad driving record, am I suppose to call my car insurance company once we are married? I pay for my own car lease and insurance. I'm not complaining about this. We're very 'seperate' when it comes to finances.

I'm not changing my name once we are married so I wasn't planning on calling my credit card companies or bank. We want to keep everything seperate since my credit is also better, ha ha.

I don't think you have to especially if you're the only driver of that car.

I think you kind of have to tell your insurance company when you get married and keep it together. Not sure though.

FH and I share our cars, but we typically just drive our own unless we have a pressing need to switch (fr instance, his car has no A/C and in NC in the summer...if he's driving around guests, he takes my car) or when one car is in the shop.

I would think that you might want to learn how to drive his car in case something happens. Also, it's handy if you rent a car in another country, since most others love stick.

I think that if you get married and each have your own car, they still remain 'your car', but there of course are some possible changes. For example, if FH has to go out to the store and my car is first on the driveway, he would have to take it and vice versa. However, I'm a car chick and take pride in my car and have NEVER let anyone drive it, so I might have to let mine be last in the driveway so he CAN'T take it out LOL

I think we'll just continue to drive our own cars

Since getting married, we primarily drive our own cars. The only exception to this is long car rides where we will switch off and on. As for car insurance - you can probably keep them separate, but it may save you money to combine them.

I would go on insurance coimpany's website and see if there is anything about it in the FAQ's.

aww thats a sucky situation! I am also very seperate w/money issues w/my FH. It's just the way I am... it's my money-I worked for it. Though we might combine things a little more in the future, I think we may still stay pretty 50/50 with things as we are now.
I always pay my own way!

not sure how that works but i DO know that my dad didnt report when my brother got his license ( he was already in his 30s ) and he got into trouble with his insurance company bc there was another driver in the house that was unreported. . . i would look into that!
