Cash Gifts versus Registry

Cash Gifts versus Registry

I considered starting a registry @ BedBathandBeyond.com, but no one has ever done that in either mine or FH's family. My mother says it's tacky to ask for gifts...

To be honest, I'd rather have cash. FH and I already have some appliances, etc. and I love shopping for my own stuff.

But is there an easy way to suggest to my guests to give us money cards as a wedding gift?

Unfortunately, there's not really an easy way to suggest that to guests. We started a registry, mainly because a lot of people on his side feel it's not personal giving money instead of a gift. A lot of people seem to feel that way, so instead of them buying you gifts and guessing what you'd need, it's sometimes easier just to start a registry. Our registry is really small, because we don't need much, but for people that prefer to give gifts, the option is there for them.

I say put as much stuff ont he BB&B regustry as you can. Why? Because at BB&B you can return gifts for cash.

Another thing to consider...some people don't like to give cash, they want to give a gift...and if you don't register for things, they will pick something out...it may turn out that you don't have the same taste!

I would definitely register...there are always some more things you could use...for example, I cannot wait to get rid of my Martha Stewart K-mart plates!!!!

Also, there is no way to ask for cash...that is tacky.

(FH wanted to do this and I had to tell him it was a no-no)

you can put gift cards on your registry maybe for home depot or best buy..but bed bath and beyond gives you cash back as long as it was on your registry so register away!!!

The only way to really do that I guess is to have a rumor spread around that you guys need cash more than the gifts.

That's what FH cousin did, her mom ended up telling anyone who asked that they preferred cash for the shower, but since I only found that out a few days ago, its too late for me b/c I bought her a gift cert to a spa that I will not be returning.......

Re: Cash Gifts versus Registry

The fear of getting duplicate gifts and hideous-looking things is what motivates me to make a registry. And BedBathandBeyond is a very good store.

But my mother is telling me: 'I know your aunts, uncles, etc. Everyone will think it's tacky to have a registry. You're practically asking for gifts...'

A friend of my FH's got married in february and wanted cash. He included a card in his wedding invitation that read:

' We are not currently registered for gifts in any department store. However, we are moving to east asia and hope to be able to finance all our moving costs'.

Was that tacky or acceptable? Is there a delicate way to ask your guests for cash? Or should I try explaining the benefits of a registry to my side of the family?

Goodness, please don't follow your cousin's lead. I would be utterly mortified if I received an invitation that read the way your cousin's did. It truly was one step below writing, 'Please give us money.'

There is no 'delicate way' of asking your guests for cash. Most New Yorkers are going to give you cash gifts anyway.

To whom must you explain a registry? A registry for the wedding, not the shower, would be word of mouth since including registry information in wedding invitations is a giant faux pas.

Go ahead and register. I'm assuming you'd be registering for your shower anyway.
