I'd bring Traveler's Checks....especially if you're going somewhere with a high 'I'm robbing the tourists' area....

Traveler Checks are 100% insured, so if they get stolen, they'll get you a new set instantly.

We used credit for two reasons:

1. to get the points
2. the exchange rate is better using a credit card

I would never bring cash. traceler's checks and/or credit cards. if cash is lsot or stolen it's gone, but traveler's checs and credit cards are insured and cab be replaced..then again I'm the person who brought $500 cash to spain and kept it in the endtable drawer..LOL

Credit, as someone said, points are great and it was just easier!
Anything we had at the hotel we stayed at, drinks, dinner etc, they just charged to the room and applied it to our cc when we left! We brought about $300+ cash with us but used mostly credit!

We're probably going to mostly use Travelers Checks. We don't have any credit cards with points on them so that doesn't matter to us. I def would not bring cash as people stated already...cash can get easily stolen. But that's JMO b/c I lose everything..lol

or, you can use your debit card with a visa/mc logo. if you sign for purchases instead of using your pin, you get the points like a cc and the favorable exchange rate, but you are really using cash so you don't incur any interest charges...this is what I do and I travel pretty frequently, especially overseas.

Credit cards! Traveler's checks are too much of a pain and not necessary anymore with the popularity of credit cards. I've been to Europe and Mexico several times and haven't used traveler's checks since my trip in '96! There is just no need to deal with the hassle of getting them replaced if they were stolen.

being i just came back from my HM.. (City of San Juan 3 days, Cruise to 5 different islansd - 7 days)

you will need cash as small shops (depending where you go) will not except charge. on the boat, you dont need anything until you leave the boat (most charge thier balances)

charge = quick and easy. but bring some cash. to withdraw money on the boat cost me 6 bucks each time (did it twice for total of 12)

I completely agree- traveler's checks are a big waste of time and money. They're not even clearly recognized under NY state law, they're just usually accepted as a result of custom and usage. Use credit/debit. Take cash out of the ATM in the country that you are going to, you'll get a better rate that when they bringing cash and exchanging while you're there. You will need cash for minor things, like taxi rides.

Make sure you call your credit card companies before you go. It's alwasy advisable to put them on notice that you will be using the card out of the country if you don't frequently travel overseas, etc. If you don't, you risk the credit card company thinking that something fishy is going on with your card, and declining charges- you won't be home to receive that 'have you recently used your card at...' call.

DH's credit card company told him the same thing! Give them a head's up before you leave, so they don't cut them off

We're staying at an all-inclusive, so we probably wouldn't bring money anway. If we do have to spend money, we'll use a credit card.

It depends on where you're going for your HM. DH and I bought AmEx traveller's checks, credit cards and depending on what we were buying we paid small purchases with cash and left the big ones with credit.

It's safer with credit as you have a paper trail and your card company protects you regardless where you travel.

Use a cc for the big purchases and bring your ATM card (but find out from your bank about being able to use it in different countries first). Exchange rate for ATMs is much better than travelers checks.
