Being a cashier for almost 15 years I have alot of time to think I should write a book. Here are some of the things that drive me crazy.
1. A cashier does not always feel happy and exited about working. If we are not overally friendly when you come to our line please do not get mad. We will get you out of the store as fast as we can and not bother you. Something is bothering us so do not get mad or get a attitude. We are not against you we just have bad days too.
2. Each day we must have to say 1000 times hit the enter button, or hit the yellow button if you want credit.
3. Its not our fault if something is not in stock so do not yell at us. just go to customer service.
4. If our line is closed and we are trying to leave to go to the bathroom please do not get mad we have to go to the bathroom too.
5. and my personal favorite even though i am a cashier doesn't mean you have to treat me like dirt.
sorry just alittle venting.

Consumer Complaints - A Small Vent
I was a cashier too for about 5 years during high school and College. And I know how hard it can be. People denigrate you because they think that they are 'smarter' than you by virtue of the fact that they are not cashiers (yeah because being a SAHM requires you to have SO much more education..) I am the MOSt sympathetic person in the world when it comes to understanding the retail business BUT.... I still find myself very aggravated with much of what goes on with cashiers - so if I may:
1. I know cashiers are human - not robots, but I will guarantee that 99.9% of the time I am NOT the cause for their anxiety or stress. Snarling, rolling your eyes and sighing while I am asking for assistance is not appreciated. I also don't expect you to be chatting over my shoulder with the cashier next to me or flirting with the guy behind me so much that you either stick a roast on top of my tomatoes or forget to help me bag entirely.
2. I have a couple of thoughts about the enter button. The first is that the process is different for several different stores. And I might have just been in Eckerd and not had to hit the yellow button for credit, so it might take me a minute to acclimate. Sometimes I have a cashier tell me 'Hit the Green enter Button' while I am still putting away my card and just haven't gotten to it yet - Patience my young grasshopper! There is also the possibility that I have never been to your store and I don't know the procedure. Repitition is a beast in most professions. I answer my phone 50 times a day by saying my name. And yeah, sometimes I think to myself 'If they are calling my extension they should KNOW who they are calling already...' but I don't assume that. I give every caller a chance.
3. You are right. People SHOULD NOT yell at you for a situation that is clearly beyond your control. However, see your #1 complaint. They might be having an awful day and they made time to come down to the store on the first day of a sale only to be told that the item isn't in stock!! That IS frustrating. I don't think they should yell at you - and I never would - but if you want people to understand that YOU have bad days, you may want to also understand that other people have bad days too.
4. If you are closing your line, please turn off your light and instruct the rest of the line that you are closing. I have no challenge with that. However, I find it RIDICULOUS when I have been standing on line for over 10 minutes for the cashier to suddenly decide that she has to shut down 2 people in front of me and not bother to say anything to the remainder of the line.
5. This is a classic and should apply to ALL professions and vocations. You should NOT be treated like dirt because you are a cashier. And neither should librarians, teachers, customer service reps, custodians or bank tellers, etc... SO PLEASE... just because I am a customer who happened to hop on your line when you are having a bad day and have to pee really badly - please don't treat me like dirt.
I do feel for you in your career. You are probably not one of the 'bad' cashiers who mistreat people all over the place. I am certainly not one of those customers who mistreat cashiers. But they are out there - on both sides. And opinions can be tainted by a few bad apples!

i was a cashier for six years and i worked in customer service - this should be posted on the door of all stores!!
AND commenting on the other side of this interaction - i cant stand when people are rude! and chatting away - i may not have always been the most chipper person at work but i hope i was never rude!
i have also been called every name in the book - from stupid to dumb to rude to inconsiderate - is this how these people would want their daughters to be treated?!?!?!?!
ETA: if you are waiting in line for twenty minutes. . . dont just stand there until the cashier is completely done with the order THEN start looking for your coupons - have it ready!!!!! at the end of 20 min on line and 10 min of being checked out. . . all of a sudden its like 'oh. . you want me to pay? YOU want my coupons????' its the same every single time! lol

i agree with you totally what about waiting until after finishing the order then they take the money out and they take their time and there is a line and other customers are angry.
