I tried a couple before I settled on the clay based non clumping Fresh Step.
- Feline Pine, but it had a really strong pine/cedar smell. As the pellets absorbed the pee and poop, it crumbled into saw dust. My cats tracked it all over the apartment. After the inital pine smell went away, there was no odor control.
- Ever Clean. This stuff worked really well. Good odor control. I didn't know at the time that clumping litters arent the greatest for the cats, and that is why I stopped using it. It was also quite expensive.
- YesterDay's News. This is similar to Feline Pine, it is compressed newspaper pellets instead of wood. Poor odor control, when it crumbled it got really dusty.
I like the Fresh Step b/c there isn't a strong perfumey smell, just good odor neutralization. It is clay based and pretty absorbent,it looks like those large sand grains you use in fish tanks. It doesn't crumble or get dusty like the others, so even though the cats track a little thru the apartment, it is easier to clean. It is also pretty inexpensive.
Hope that helps!

We use Fresh Step Scoop. We've been using it for 4 years now and love it.

Re: cat litter
rite aid makes the best one. It is called 'owners choice'. It is hypoallergenic, and honestly the best litter for my boys.

Regi - what is that one made of? Is it dust-free.
Sounds interesting, I never heard of it. My cats have asthma so I would like to look into it.

Re: cat litter
I LOVE Cat's Pride. I can only find it in Pathmark....so when I can get there I buy a lot.
This stuff is completely odorless and flushable...the two most important things for us. Chloe has been using it since she was a kitten. I highly recommend it!

Re: cat litter
Clumping is bad for cats because it gets caught inbetween their paws (or 'fingers') and then when they clean themselves (by licking of course) they end up digesting it. Then it clummps in their belly and is harmful.
if i find an article later i'll post it. i had been using clumping litter too and then i heard this and i switched right away. its not something you would think about.

I use fresh step too. It has the best neutralizer and least dust. The type I use doesn't have the crystals.

All of the research I've done said that clumping is only bad for kittens. I know my cat doesn't lick his toes after coming out of the litter box. We have a litter mat outside of his box, and any excess litter comes off on that. If clumping litter was really harmful to all cats, it wouldn't have been around as long.

Re: cat litter
i never even though of that with the clumping litter. my cat is soooo funny when she comes out of the box too because she will sit on the ends with all four paws on the sides of the box waiting for all the pebbles to fall off before she leaves the box.
BUT.. the thought of her ON MY PILLOW at night after coming out of her litter box just realllllllllllllly grossed me out!! I am thinking about buying those cat wipes for her to clean her paws with.
