Re: Cat lovers??
I've only ever had female cats with no problems. My mom wouldn't allow us to have males for some reason -- probably because she was afraid they are more likely to spray or something.

I've only had males- who were always great but I've been around females and they were fine too. Cats are great animals and it definitely also depends on how you bring them up. I have found that they adapt to your personality and living environment.

Re: Cat lovers??
We had both male and female cats and funny enough, our male cats were move 'lovey' than our female cats. but its all about how you raise them and handle them. but yes, male cats can spray.

Had 3 cats. No difference if you neuter them (which you should). None of our cats ever ever ever peed outside of the littler box...but all were neutered & declawed as early as safe.

I have had cats all of my life, I think males are more cuddly, but it depends on how you treat any animal from the time they are a baby. You can have trouble with males spraying and females going into heat, so it is very wise to spay or neuter them. I have 3 females and 1 male right now and they are all fixed and de-clawed and they are the best pets anyone could ask for, you just have to keep the litter box clean b/c cat pee really stinks! I would reccomend you getting one because they make great pets. HTH

Re: Cat lovers??
I have two beautiful kitties both male and they are so loving. Like everyone else depends on the environment they are in and how you raise them. One of my cats sleeps on my chest purring every night.

I've had a male cat and had no problems with him. Very affectionate and vocal with me, and never sprayed, but I also had him neutered while he was young.
Only late in his life did he have 'accidents' ouside his litter box, but then he was sick so I forgave him and just cleaned it up. Miss my baby.

I have had both male and female cats and If you get the males neutered they will not spray. Either sex can be lovable.

Re: Cat lovers??
I never had a cat in my life, was always a dog person, but my FH wanted a pet badly and we're just not home enough for a dog, so we adopted Agatha. That's Agatha in my avatar. She's a wonderful companion. She's playful and fun, has never had an 'accident' since the day we brought her home (no housetraining!) and she's not a destructive cat, either. We're very happy we got her. She appears to be a Maine Coon mix, which is a wonderful breed, very friendly and dog-like, although she came from the pound.
My advice: get a kitten, or two, so they have a friend. From what I understand, it's not so easy to introduce another cat later on, but littermates or kittens the same age make wonderful companions. DON'T let your cat out--'outdoor' cats have a much, much shorter life span than indoor cats. Something along the lines of three vs. fifteen years. There are dogs, other cats, cars, diseases, all sorts of terrible fates than can be prevented by keeping your cat indoors. It is not cruel to keep your cat inside, a cat can be perfectly happy indoors.
Speaking of cruel, don't declaw your cat. It's not like removing a nail, they actually amputate the last bone of the cat's 'toes.' Would you like that? It's serious surgery, and is actually illegal in a lot of European countries. And If you have a cat from kittenhood, you can teach it not to scratch anything but scratch pads or posts. Also, there are things called 'Soft Paws' that are little vinyl caps that are glued onto the cat's claws. Eventually they need to be replaced, but they are effective, and quite humane. However, we've never needed them with Agatha.
Good luck with your new little friend(s)!!

I have two girls - sisters actually- that we adopted at the same time. We got a puppy after about 2 yrs of having the cats and if you grew up with dogs, then trust me, cats are a cake walk!
I love my cats to pieces and they are so easy going and low maintanence it's fantastic. I think you'll be just fine with one cat!

Re: Cat lovers??
Girls are definitely better! I had a male cat and while he was the sweetest thing ever he would pee on everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was horrible! I ended up giving him away because of it. He was neutered before he was able to 'spray' but he still had the instinct to leave his scent everywhere.
Get a female cat definitely and have her spayed as soon as she's old enough. A female cat in heat is ANNOYING!!

Re: Cat lovers??
DH and I just adopted a beautiful 9 month old male Bombay from the shelter yesterday! Growing up we had male and female cats and the male cats always seemed more lovey but it was probably just there personality. You have to spay or neuter no matter what sex you get. It's healthier for the cat and less trouble for you! Good luck
