Cat question: How often

Cat question: How often

.......do you feed your cat? I've posted about this before. We have two cats (one is fat,one is skinny). The fat cat will eat all day long.
I've decided to only let him eat now in the morning and I will leave the bowl out when I go to sleep.(Otherwise they will bug me all night long.)
I am trying to feed skinny cat on the side during the day if he's hungry. Do you think it will work?

I have the exact same problem, but with a twist: the skinny one will throw up almost everytime he eats because A) he eats too fast and B) he has hairballs. So I've been feeding them Iams for Weight and Hairballs. I give them a small amount 2x a day. The fatty looks a little less fat, and the skinny one lost a little of his hanging belly too, and he's been throwing up less often too.

Unless you're home to supervise, I wouldn't think it would work....only b/c one would assume that the fat cat will bully the skinny cat and take his food....

Are you home to watch?

Re: Cat question: How often

I have the same situation. Two cats (sisters), one fat and one skinny. If we give them both treats at the same time, for example, the fat one will eat hers, then go eat the skinny one's before she has a chance to even realize it's there. She is a little slow, too, I think

The fat one is always the first to the food bowl, and the skinny one follows the fat one around, so when the fat one is done eating and leaves, the skinny one will leave with her, rather than taking her turn at the food.

I don't know what the solution is, but there has got to be something! Sorry, not much help I guess.

TO ensure the skinny cat gets the food, I think you would need to have a set feeding time for her and feed her seperately from the fat cat - one of them would have to be in a room by thereself.

Re: Cat question: How often

Our fat cat hoards all the food. We have a bowl with a divider and I put food in both sides. The fat cat will stand on top of the other one to get him to back off so he can have both sides to himself. I've also tried putting food in one room for one cat and then carried the skinny one to the next room and put some food down for him. Fat cat comes over and eats his food! Its very annoying.
I figured I can watch them eat a bit in the morning and then take the bowl away. Then put the bowl back at night so I can sleep without them bugging me. I don't know if it will work. The fat cat has to be 20 pounds or more. Someone pukes too. Its probably the little one because he's eating so fast otherwise he doesn't get any.

When I wake up they both do the “feed me, feed me” dance around me until I make it into the kitchen. The fatty always runs ahead of the skinny one to the bowl. I also have a 2-sided bowl and put a little in both sides. The skinny one never gets the first crack at the food unless we force the fatty away. And they won’t eat at the same time – I think Mr. Skinny is afraid.

And I’ve tried feeding them separately, but it didn’t really work out too well.

I am surprised skinny doesn't fight for his food. He is definately the one who always wins their fights. He always bites fatty when he is sitting somewhere that skinny wants to sit. Fatty goes off running away hiding. But he doesn't fight for his food. He's probably afraid of getting smothered.

NovemberSue, it sounds like our cats are two sets of twins! All of the same idiosyncrasies!

I have a double sided bowl and I fill it (not overflowing) each morning when I get up. I let them pick at it all day.

This thread reminds me of an old rhyme we used to say:

'Fatty and Skinny went to bed. Fatty rolled over and Skinny was dead!' LOL sorry had to get that out.

BoogieDownBride: Yes, they sound like they are related.
MrsTC: We keep a little bit of food down all day but fatty cat will eat throughout the entire day. He purrs when he eats too like there's nothing better. And they are eating Lite cat food and he's still HUGE!
