Catering for Outdoor Wedding? Close to tears!

Catering for Outdoor Wedding? Close to tears!

Hello fellow brides,

I am ready to burst into tears at any moment now.

My fiancee and I had a long talk about the ridiculous amount of money that we are spending on this wedding - and we have decided to look into an nice summer backyard event.

However, our current caterer wants to charge us $12 MORE than the cost per head that we are paying to have it on site. Which is unacceptable and the reason for my tears.

We have ot make this cheaper and I do not want to scrimp on the band or photos since this will be crucial to a successful backyard wedding.

So, is anyone out there having a wedding catered by a restaurant or caterer (with tasty food) that costs less than $65/head?

Please, please help me!

thanks so much.

I am sorry to hear that things aren't working out. Would it be possible to have the wedding at a restaurant? Keep in mind that a backyard wedding entails renting tables, chairs, linens, plates, glasses, silverware, and a tent (in case of rain). I hear that the Bayview House/Captain Bills is gorgeous. The Crows Nest is another option. I think there prices run around 70pp and includes everything. Another relatively inexpensive venue is Sunken Meadow.

I loe backyard weddings, but sometimes the $$$ is more than having it at a hall.

Good Luck!

BTW - how many guests are you anticipating?

I agree with Quinn....

you can find cheaper halls than trying to do it all yourself...Did you try any of the lessings groups? like Smithtown Landing etc. I went there and it was 70/pp for a sat. night in September...she also does flowers etc. its worth a shot.

where is your wedding now? is it alot per head?

Thanks guys,

We looked into renting tables and tents and lines and that's only about 2K for 125 persons. We have 150 coming so it shouldn't be much more. It's the food that's causing me such worry.

I guess I just don't want to go ahead with the big hooplha wedding. It was never out original idea to do this, and I guess we let other people 'tell us' that this big gala affair was what we wanted.

We're really laid back and the idea of hanging out in a backyard in June sounds much more appealing than a wedding in March in a hall.

The Lessings want $77/head for everything. Which isn't bad I guess.

I think I am just freaking out.

Don't worry about it, I know the perfect caterer. His name is Troy Conrad from Hamptons Clambakes. He caterers affairs all over - not just the hamptons. I'm having my wedding in a private home we rented for the week in Southampton. He's doing the catering at $65 per person we're getting a cocktail hour with seared tuna, pasta station, clams and mussels station and a few other passed foods. Dinner is a sit down dinner with mesculin salad, lobster tail and filet mignon dinner, and dessert of strawberries and brownies. $65 includes service. He does great buffets also that are about the same price and I hear you get a ton of food. He can also help arrange for table rentals, alcohol and all that. He's been really helpful - I would definitely give him a call and tell him Tracy Reynolds sent you. 631-324-8620. His website is www.hamptonclambake.com

I know of 2 caterers that are reasonable. We're using Iavarone Bros. and paying about $60.00 per person which includes a 13 dish buffet and open bar.
Another option is Colins and Main in Sayville. My sister used them for her wedding and they were awesome.
Best of luck to you!!!

a friend of mine went to a backyard wedding this weekend- that was just like a big cocktail hour, with a bunch of different stations and stuff--he said it was really nice, maybe you can look into something like that.

I am getting married at 15th and West in Garden City. It is a lot different from a typical wedding hall, elegant but laid back - she is doing $80 pp on a Saturday night, so I would expect days would be a good amt. cheaper, let me know if you want the info.

Where are you getting married? I am having my reception @ Southampton Elks club. I wanted to put most of the money into a great band and good food. We got the band I have always wanted and the chef at the Elks is a retired chef that worked at awesome restaurants in manhattan and now he does it for fun. We are paying $35 p/p including alcohol. Being that it is an Elks club and they are always helping the community, they get great deals at the marinas and local markets on fresh seafood and vegetables. Good Luck. We are going to have a sushi chef from Mt. Fuji for the cocktail hour too. Good Luck!

Thanks everyone for all of the support. My fiancee and I went home, and actually made a really geeky excel spreadsheet with all of our costs and budgeted it out. We are keeping the wedding at Timber Point - yeah - and we will continue on with the year of pverty for now! Thanks again!

Hello there. I had the same problem... then I found 'Tanglewood Catering'. The company is in Holbrook, and will go wherever you want... big or small. My wedding is 100 people, but his portfolio is unbelievable!! Ask for Nick! He is great, and will make every effort to do just what you want. 631-588-8483 (or) 800-427-7880
Good Luck to you!!!

The year of poverty is sort of a guarantee! Just go with it. Enjoy it - there are a million places where you can cut corners to fit your budget. It will be well worth it when you look your picutres with your little girl or boy someday!

We wanted inexpensive also, but wanted it indoors. The Plainview Holiday Inn gave us a Saturday night wedding, sit down dinner, cocktail hour, cake, center pcs for $53.95 a person!!! The let us have dinner there on them and the food was great!!!! Hope this helps:! I have their number if you need it:

Willow,
First off, I love the sound of you wedding!! I think an outdoor, backyard reception sounds like so much fun. I may decide to do the same.

I think the Snapper Inn and/or Riverview in Oakdale offer off-premise catering. You might also want to call other restaurants that you like and not catering halls. The halls might be more focused on having their events in-house and may not have as much experience off premise. Good luck, and take a deep breath, everything will work out.

Hi Willow,

I didn't read all the posts before I responsed earlier about the outdoor wedding.

I am really glad you will be able to do what you'd like and have your wedding at Timber Point. I've heard it is just beautiful. Sometimes I freak out too just thinking about the $$$ involved but in the end we'll be happy we had a lovely day.

Best of luck
