In order to get married in the church... do you both have to have your confirmation or do you just need to be baptized?
I thought you both MUST have your confirmation, my friend was told otherwise...
Thanks!

Re: Catholic Brides
Depends on the church... This was a huge concern for me because I was baptised and I had my communion but I never got confirmed. My church -- St. Philp Neri Church in Northport --- told us that I only need to be baptized...I did not need to be confirmed.

Re: Catholic Brides
i think it depends on the church - best way is to just ask. it wasn't an issue for us since we both have all sacrements

Re: Catholic Brides
My church made us show proof of all the sacrements... so that's why I thought it was a must. So they still have a chance here! Glad to hear that.

My church did the same. We had to show proof. I thought it was a requirement because the rules are not established church by church..they are set by the Diocese. I would all the diocese or the church directly

Re: Catholic Brides
FH and I are getting married in a Catholic church and he has both, I was only baptized and the church was fine with that. We just have to show proof of our baptism and confirmation certificates.
Good luck to your friend!

Re: Catholic Brides
I just went through this so I can tell you from first hand experience. You can get married in the Catholic church as long as you were baptized.
You can have ceremony or a mass however if you have a mass you cannot take communion unless you get the additional sacraments. We didn't want a full mass anyway so there was no issue
Hope that helps!

Re: Catholic Brides
I have had all my sacraments and FH wasn't even baptised but we are still able to get married in the church. The only requirement was that one of us be baptised....and willing to fork over that hefty donation.

Re: Catholic Brides
My DH isn't even Catholic, he's Anglican (I'm Catholic and we got married in a Catholic church - ceremony only, no mass). He had been confirmed (I'm not sure about baptism ) We did bring his confirmation records with us - they said it was much easier if we had that. But we had no problems.

Re: Catholic Brides
With us they were only interested in seeing proof of baptism. We wanted a full mass so we both had to be baptized.

Re: Catholic Brides
You do not have to have communion, confirmation, etc. at most churches. They may ask you more questions if you are both not Catholic, but I know Jewish people getting married in the Catholid church. Anyone can get married there, sometimes it is just a longer process if you both don't have all of the sacraments.

Re: Catholic Brides
Both DH and I had made all of our sacraments and had a a full mass, but my friend hadn't been confirmed and they made her go through the whole conversion process just to have a Catholic mass. This was someone who went to Catholic school and for one reason or another just never got confirmed but had the other sacraments and she had to sit through classes of everything!

See this is what I know people had to do at my church!! That's why I kept telling my friend this is what her FI is going to have to do... but now I see there are PLENTY of churches out there on LI that are not a strict, so I hope that they can get out of this one!!

It is sad, too. My friend was in class with people who didn't know anything about Catholicism and she had gone to Catholic school and taken theology classes until she was 17 and then went to a Catholic college. She knew everything, just needed to be confirmed, but there was no class for someone like that.

Poor thing. What a waste of time for her.

Re: Catholic Brides
My church wanted my FH to do the RCIA thing. My FH is a cop and schedule and days rotate so it is almost immpossible to get him to do that. When I called back in a panic they said it is nice to do it but not reccomnded. WHEW! He was baptized only I was baptized, communion, and confirmed. So he was the problem we do have to take FOCCUS and do PreCana but that should be it! Good Luck!

Re: Catholic Brides
It trully depends on the church and who you speak to in the church. I was in a very similar situation becuase i was baptised and made my communion and confirmation. However, my FI was only baptised. Fortunately the church we want to get married at is more than happy to marry us and we just booked the church last night. if your church won't marry you because your FI was only baptised there are plenty of other catholic church's that will. Your probably stressing the whole thing, but that's natural, i know i was and it turned out to be a piece of cake.
