I apologize if this is a stupid question, but I honestly don't have a clue how it works.
FH and I are planning to start booking our wedding for March 2012. However, due to my company basically cancelling our health insurance I am pretty much left un-covered. FH suggested that we get married next month at city hall so that I can at least be put under his health insurance right away, and then we still have the wedding as planned for next year.
Will we still be able to be married in a church if we were married by city hall a year before?
TIA!

Re: Catholic Brides
I believe so, I don't think your marriage is recognized by the catholic church unless it is preformed by a priest, so you should be good....call your parish first though

Re: Catholic Brides
you can still get married at your church, however, when you send out the invites, you would have to say a renewal of your vows, since you are technically married.
the catholic church does not recognize any marriage outside of the church so you can get married there. however if you were divorced you could not.

Re: Catholic Brides
Im pretty sure you can..i wanted to get married on my grandmothers birthday (its like a tuesday in 2012)since she passed away. My mom suggested we get married at city hall so we can have the date and then get married that weekend in church.

Re: Catholic Brides
Yes, technically you're married but its not like you're required to put vow renewel on the invites, unless thats what you want.
Being in the miltary I've seen several people have a civil marriage because of timing and choose have a wedding celebration after. Many of them don't want to take away from the latter wedding so they don't tell many people, and no one is the wiser.
Speak to your priest, the ceremony is called a convalidation ceremony if you're already legally married but not married through the church.

Re: Catholic Brides
Can you register as domestic partners instead of getting married? I know you can if one of you works for the city, but I think some other companies allow it on their insurance.

Re: Catholic Brides
You should talk to the church about this specifically. I think technically it would be a convalidation, and this may change the type of ceremony you can have. The church will probably be very understanding

You can still get married in the catholic church if your divorced...you just have to get ur previous marriage anulled...which is a long and tedious process apparently.
My precana leaders were both married previously so the church doesn't frown upon it at all!

Re: Catholic Brides
what a coincidence! the same thing is happening to me! we found out that the 'domestic partner' thing only applies to same sex couples, how unfair! So FH and I are getting our marriage license soon, just have in mind that they give u (I believe) 90 days for u to have a ceremony and be validated, otherwise the license will expire and u have to do everything again. When I heard this, I got worried 'cause I wanted to have the ceremony in our church in Sep when we're having our wedding, but I found out that u can have a super simple ceremony in the same town hall where u applied and have the clerk or officiant from there sign the document, and STILL have ur real ceremony in a church.

Re: Catholic Brides
i would talk to the church...instead of city hall, why not just do a small ceremony at the church now....and then another one next year. i think it would be nice for the same priest to perform both services.

Yes. You can. I know people who have had civil ceremonies and are now planning a Church wedding.

Re: Catholic Brides
Do you live together? You might be able to get insurance under the domestic partnership laws.

Re: Catholic Brides
We don't really live together but we took my current apartment together with that intent. With the lease and our joint bank account we were able to prove domestic partnership and both my daughter and I are on his insurance as of 1/1 and then we'll change to family coverage after the wedding.

FH and I went through this a few years ago, and we became domestic partners and were covered instead of getting married

This.
They will know if you're married already because the priest is the one at the church ceremony who signs the license.

Re: Catholic Brides
A city hall or Court wedding is not recognized by the Church, but if I were you, since the Church likes things a certain way, I would go talk to your Priest first and explain to thim that you have no other option, etc. etc. This way, when it comes time for pre-cana and your ceremony, there will be no hiccups since you have to present the Church with your marriage certificate from the town.
