Catholic Brides - Banns of Marriage???

Is anyone doing this???

My mother keeps saying we need to, but b/c we are not getting married in my parish OR FH's, we are so confused as to where the Banns would even go!

The Deacon that's marrying us says they would go in my parish's bulletin AND FH's, but the whole thing is very confusing!!

What is it? haha guess I'm not that catholic....even though I sure went to church a lot....

ETS: ok I just read about it on wikipedia haha....The only thing we had was it was in our parish bulletin the week of, announcing we were getting married that weekend....so if that counts than I guess we did it, but it was just at my parents church (my childhood church) which is where we got married...

i kept thinking about everyone who might see it lol

My mom took her bulletin from church the Sunday before, but at our rehearsal they actually gave us like 30 copies to give out to people as a memento!

when we went to our church meeting this week they mentioned that they dont do it- so I think I will ask my mom to have it done in NJ for the parish I grew up in.

i thought it just meant the announcement in the bulletin that week cuz i always see them on there and it says 'banns of marriage' and then lists the couples names and dates hehehe.

i would assume u could just do it in yours or both. we just have to call in or hand them a paper with our names and the church that i belong to and our date (we're getting married in fh's church) like a few weeks before so they can have it to add to the bulletin.

im sure if u call both churches theyll tell you how to format it/send it in.

I think each parish may do it a little differently.

For us they put them in for the three weeks prior to your wedding date. It is automatic. We were told that we can request for FH's parish to announce them in their bulletin.

We also learned that the reason they post them is so if anyone objects to the marriage they can come forward -- since they no longer say 'if anyone objects to this union' at the mass/ceremony they make the 'public announcement' the weeks leading up to the wedding.

I believe the banns would go in YOUR parish bulletin. Do you need permission from your parish to get married in another?

I do and I think that is how your parish knows and will post. I dont think anything needs to be done on your part.

I believe this is how my parish does it, too. Problem is, we aren't getting married there so that is the aspect that's throwing us off. It can't be automatic if they don't know we're getting married LOL!

it is true bc i never had seen anyone mention it here. Its funny bc when mil showed me it was the 2nd announcement they made, and i see Denise and Joseph's 2nd and thats all i see and i thought its not our 2nd marriage im such an idiot...im not catholic but got married in a catholic church but didnt know about this...and she explained how it comes out 3x in the bulletin, first 1 3 weeks before the wedding and then the other 2 the last 2 weeks before.

Do you need permission to get married in another parish? If you do, they need to know what parish you are getting married in and that is how they know.

Call your parish and tell them. They will most likely post it for you. We were told to request it in the bulletin for FH's parish.

we don't have a choice in Brooklyn, they automatically print them in the bulletins of both parishes (mine and FH's) every week for the 3 weeks prior to the wedding. ITs to announce to the parish you are getting married but also its for anyone who may have an objection to the wedding to be able to voice it as well. I worked in the rectory for a few years lol
