Catholic brides - priest question

Catholic brides - priest question

I went to a Catholic college, and I am close to the priest who ran our program. My FI and I decided that we would have the primary celebrant at our wedding be someone that knows both of us equally, so we did not ask him to be the primary celebrant.

This priest is being invited to the wedding...now I know if he was the primary celebrant, we'd have to pay for his hotel, etc. Would the same be true if we asked him to co-celebrate?

I don't mean to sound cheap, but I'm going broke.

I don't believe it is necessary to pay for his accommodations. We are inviting 6 priests to our wedding and they are each responsible for their own hotels. If it might make you feel better, maybe you can offer a place among relatives for him to stay? Otherwise, if he has agreed to come, he has probably taken into consideration the costs involved. You're not alone in going broke

We are having FI's best friend marry us. We did not ask his other priest friends to con-celebrate. If we had, and they were traveling from some place where they needed to stay overnight, we would pay for their lodging. It would be out of courtesy, since celebrating a mass is work for them, they would be doing us a favor, and priests do not get paid alot of money.

The priest who did our wedding was a friend, and I offered to pay for his accommodations and airfare. He didn't take me up on the offer, and made his own arrangements. I think if you just invited him as a guest, and not to concelebrate the mass, then he would decide, like everyone else from OOT whether or not to come. But since he is participating in the ceremony, I think you should do what you can to accommodate him.

If he is a priest that belongs to an individual order, rather than a diocesan priest, there might be a residence belonging to the order where he could stay. I think it could be uncomfortable for him to stay with people he doesn't know, I would rather pay the $ for him to feel welcome and comfortable than ask him to stay as a guest in someone's house, unless you think he is the type that wouldn't mind.
