Re: Catholic Mass Hymns????
DId he give you a booklet? We have this book and in the back is the form we need to fill out with all the readings/hymns/prayers we want and in the front of the book is the choices. Sorry, I don't know how many you need off hand, but the priest should tell you that.

Re: Catholic Mass Hymns????
did you get the readings book at pre-cana? it gives you a pretty good idea of where you would need them or where you could have them sung.
i would call your organist or song leader and ask for a list of suggestions. there are SO many to chose from. are you having a ceremony or a mass?

Re: Catholic Mass Hymns????
Thanks, I am having a full mass.
The book given to me seems like I have to pick put everything. My priest only said to pick out old/new testament readings at the time.
I am so confused.
I would really love Ave Maria sung, but it is not in the book!!!
Grrr!

Ok, then I would definitely call your organist and just talk things through with him/her. There are lots of choices. You could do something very flowery music wise, you could also do much more traditional hymns. But I think you should set up a meeting with the organist and then he can probably play snippets from some things so you can hear them instead of picking off a page.

You should call the singer/organist. FH and I just had our final mtg w/the priest on Tuesday and he said the organist/singer will call us a month prior to the wedding. FH and I have some favorite hymns that we know we want so we'll share them with her and see how she can incorporate them.

Re: Catholic Mass Hymns????
We called the music director and he gave us a form that listed when we would need a hymn and which ones were appropriate for that point in the mass.
It was very helpful!

You should talk to the music director or organist of your church. I was completely clueless about this, but he had a list of suggestions and will walk you through what you need.

Re: Catholic Mass Hymns????
hi regal beagle!
i've posted a lot on this in the past, so i am going to dig up some posts for you and then post onto this thread.... hopefully they will be helpful to you.
here we go:
I was lucky because as a cantor, I know all the music for the church... so I knew exactly what I wanted.
For those less experienced, I would make an appointment with your music director and have him/her play some bits and pieces of things that you like. If you're havign a Mass you will want a few hymns in there... why not go to the church, borrow a hymnal and look up in the back songs about love, marriage, the eucharist (etc. (They are listed by title and by subject in the back of the book). See what words strike you and see if the director can play it out for you and see what you like. Or maybe you know someone that plays a little piano or something and can bang it out for you.
my suggestion is pick the hymns and songs you like. that's what i did and i got more compliments on how beautiful the music was... it was so originial and differernt. while it was still church music, it was not the typical wedding selections.
GOOD LUCK!

Re: Catholic Mass Hymns????
You will need
1. Responsorial Psalm (this can also be read, but I think it's nicer sung) 2. Unity Candle: if you're doing one, many do one here. 3. Communion Hymn (depending on how many people are receiving, you may need two). 4. If you're presenting flowers to the Blessed Mother, (people do this after Communion), it's a nice to do a song here. Most people do a 'Mary' song like 'Ave Maria, Lady of Knock, immaculate Mary, etc.
Your musician(s) or organist can help you with selections. Also, you need to decide if you want the Mass parts sung (i.e. the Holy, Holy, Memorial Acclamation (which is 'Christ Has Died, Christ is risen, etc. etc.) and the Great Amen.) Your cantor or soloist would do this. If NOT, you need to let the priest know and he will SAY all of those during the consecration).
HTH! good luck!

Re: Catholic Mass Hymns????
many moons ago i posted a long thread onto music for Catholic weddings... if you do a search, on catholic music it should come up.
i am doing:
Processional: Mom: Ave Maria (schubert) BP: Sheep May Safely Graze (Bach) ME: Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring (Bach)
Responsorial Psalm: 'Magnificat' (Chepponis) Gospel Acclamation: 'Celtic Alleluia' Unity Candle: 'The Lord Bless You and Keep You' (lutkin)*
Presentation of the Gifts: 'Ubi Caritas' (Durufle)* Communion: 'Now in this Banquet' (Haugen) and 'If Ye Love Me' (Tallis)*
Presentation to the Blessed Mother: 'Salve Regina'
Recessional: 'Toccata' from the 5th Symphony (Widor)
All songs with * are being sung by a choir, so those probably won't be helpful to you.
HTH!
