There is an essential social element to every wedding. It is the formal making of a contact between a man and a woman who will then want their marriage to be recognized by the society in which they live and by the State which regulates the legal and financial aspects of marriage. (Those who profess a religious faith also want to see their relationship formed in relation to God's will and blessing.)

The questions of intent are designed to properly identify the parties to the marriage and to have each of them declare that they will receive each other as husband and wife. We need to hear the clear intention of man and woman before we proceed.
