Catholic Preist

Both FH and I are catholic but we are not getting married in church, instead we want to get married at the reception hall. Anyone else do this? If so can you let me know how this works? I did a search and it seems like you can not geta preiest to perform the ceremony??? Any help would be very appreciated

It will be VERY VERY difficult. I see you are getting married at Oheka. Ask Rick. I think he had a priest perform his ceremony at Oheka.

I'm getting married at my hall and short of a pact with God himself, it is nearly impossible to get a Roman Catholic priest to marry you outside the church. I had a long time friend of the family tell me NO WAY -- and he would do anything for me if he could. So I hired Rev. Michael Callahan, from this site. My ceremony will be nearly identical to one held in church, but unfortunately won't be recognized by the church.

Thats really sad so then is Rev michael Callahan Catholic? How come he can do it?

Because he's a Rev. Apparently priests - or at least the huge majority of them - will not perform outside of church.

No offense to anyone, but I think it's utter BS that god won't 'recognize' the marriage if it's not in a church. I just don't get that rationale.

There are many X-Priests who still practice as a reverand or something, but they are not Priests in the eyes of the Church. It doesn't 'count' to get married by one of them either. yes, it is legal as long as they are allowed to marry under the laws of NY State, but the Church doesn't recognize the marriage.
You have to be married inside of a church in order to have the marriage recognized by the Church, unless there is a huge circumstance such as you are in a hospital or something like that. I think then they can make an exception.
You must also attend pre-cana if your marriage is to be performed by a Priest.
I am not looking to debate the issue, since this is a personal decision. But if you are looking for a Church-recognized marriage then you have to have it in a Church. And it isn't God who doesn't recognize the marriage- it is the Catholic Church. Those are 2 very different things.

Whoops, I meant church. Either way, I still think it's BS - again, no offense to anyone.

Rev. Callahan was a Roman Catholic priest but left and now is part of the Old Catholic Church if I remember correctly. No pre-cana, but as I already said, my marriage will not be recognized by the church. And I totally agree that its a bunch of BS but I don't make the rules.

Re: Catholic Preist

I am also getting married at Oheka, and both of us are catholic. I spent the first two months of planning reseaching this issue. And you have two choices:

Go throught the pre-cana and get married before your wedding at Oheka. And the day of the wedding hire the other priest to have a ceremony there-even tho you have already been married at the church. You can do an intimate low key wedding maybe just the immediate family at the church.

Or

I will be getting married at Oheka by an outside preist. We will waite a few moths, then go to our local church and aske them to marry us since we already are legally married by the state. I will ask them to marry us in the priest chamber. No formal ceremony.

Hope this helps.

I can get around all of this because I am Catholic but my FI is not.
The church is much more lenient in these situations and will actually marry us inside or outside the church.
That said, a friend of the family who is a priest said he can't marry us if we are outside - we have to be indoors. That seems very strange to me. If I'm outside the church - why does it matter if I'm indoors?

I already have a church booked but they are really getting on my nerves. All they care about is the cash they demand to perfrom the ceremony. they dont' even care if we raise our kids Catholic (yes - this is a normal Catholic church on LI)

I'm a little frustrated with the church so I'm thinking of just doing it outside.

This way i avoid the 5 hour gap between ceremony and reception

Re: Catholic Preist

Thanks for the info~ I am going to meet with Father Callahan next week. I guess I will just have to get remarried by the church afterwards.
