celebrating a child's bday at your rehearsal dinner?
So I was on the phone with FMIL this morning and she says that we will have a cake for one of the ring bearers at the RD. The RD is on his bday. Now, I am not a selfish person, but I am not going to spend 75 bucks on a groom's cake to have people eat a child's bday cake at our RD. Plus, having a cake for a 3 year old at our RD then turns into him opening bday gifts there as well. I asked FI what he thought and he said that it was totally coming from his mom and not the RB's mom(fi's aunt) because his aunt understands that it would be rude. What do you all think of this?

No offense.. but yeah, I think it's rude. One event at a time. Sorry.

If you didn't mind that would be one thing, but yeah, I think it's not appropriate to encroach on your day like that. Besides, would it be fair to the child?

I can't say that because the day of my RD is my FI's friend's (a GM) wife's b-day. After we cut the cake, I am actually going to have the waiters sing to her while they bring her her piece of cake.

Is it possible to talk to FI's aunt and tell her you are a bit uncomfortable with this arrangement? If so, maybe she can help convince your FMIL that this is a bit inappropriate. It may be a bit uncomfortable for some of the guests at the RD as they do not know this child. If there is a birthday, the child will expect birthday presents, so it will become a celebration for both you and FI as well for this child's birthday. Good luck!

I totally understand what u sayin about spending all that money on a grooms cake I dont think u are being selfish At all. I would be a little upset if she came to me and said this is what I want. Maybe if u got like a little tiny ice cream cake or bought 1 cupcake from a bakery and put a candle in it. The kids only 3 he wont know there is no birthday cake that day for him.

I would suggest nylisa's way of dealing with it to FMIL. He's a child, so people who don't know him won't mind singing...they'll think it's cute. Opening gifts is inappropriate, though.

Kids can think what they like but they don't run the show. It should be explained to him that it's not the time or place for gifts.

thats tough one.. i probably wouldnt mind if it were me and it were my flower girl, BUT if your planing on a grooms cake, then a birthday cake would kinda take away...
maybe they can go back to someones house afterward for another cake for the RB?
OR maybe your cake could be regular and RB cake could be carvel? so icecream is a little different?
OR what about getting the RB one of those fancy cupcakes with a candle in the middle?

I would get a small ice cream cake for the child, and just say that you would appreciate no gift giviing at the RD because it would become too hectic with everything else! I dont see a problem with a small cake though! JMO

I think it would be OK to sing 'Happy Brithday' to him and maybe give him an ice cream sundae or a cupcake or something...but I wouldn't agree to a whole cake and opening presents.

I would sing and have a small 8' cake. I had a 8' cake for my step mom at the wedding and had the band sing happy birthday for her!
I think if you are doing it at the very end of the dinner people will be leaving anyway.. so he can go home and open gifts.

YOu don't need to have a cake or anything, just maybe acknowledge the fact that it is his birthday in some way.. maybe if you are giving gifts out that night, sing happy birthday to him... I don't know.. that's a tough one.. especially if the fmil is being annoying about it
