Most phones that we use in the USA aren't compatible for international calls (they can't make or receive calls while abroad due to the technical specifications). What are you ladies doing? I feel a strong need to be reachable in case something should happen to one of my relatives while I'm away. I know it's neurotic, but it's important to me. Lots of my close family members are ill. Do you think I can purchase a disposal phone and calling card in Antigua?

Some islands have it where you can rent a cell phone while you're there. FH and I did that when we went to Aruba in Sept, and we were so glad we did b/c after he proposed I needed to call everyone LOL!

i know when we go away FMIL has verizon andit always works, my cingular never did - but i also didnt add it to my plan because it can be VERY expensive. even just roaming for allthat time kills the battery. i brought mine just to see and it would go dead in just a few hours due to roaming

I called my cell provider and from what I learned, it has nothing to do with my plan or even with their company. It all boils down to the type of phone I'm using. Most phones in the USA are CDMA compatible, non-USA calls require a GSM compatible device. So..unless I want to rent a GSM phone from Sprint, then I'll probably use a calling card. Thanks for the help though.

i have t-mobile, and am able to add an international plan for whatever country i visit. there is a small monthly fee, and a per minute charge.
verizon phones dont have sim cards so u def cant do it with their phones.

we stayed at sandals antigua and i'm not sure if we had internet in our room, but they do have computers available near the lobby. I didn't go online once while we were there! But you can give your family the number to the resort if there are any emergencies, and they can leave you messages in your room. You're going to have so much fun there!

We aren't bringing our cell phone on our HM. We will have time to email and that's enough. If there is an emergency both of our parents will have our hotel info in case they need to reach us.

I know you can rent international cel phones, just google it!
I think you should be able to use any GSM phone, but I think the fees for calls are going to be insane.

You will not have any issues with the internet at Sandals. Most rooms have internet but they all have at least a small business center where you can access the internet.
If you would feel more comfortable with a phone, call your provided and see where you can rent a phone. I have Verizon and all I have to do is call and add International on and then take it off when I am finished with it -- I do it for work.
Not 100% sure about Antigua but many of hte islands just have an area call and number like here -- its not like trying to dial Europe.

If you have Verizon you have to get a Global Phone. Putting the international plan on your phone does not make it work in another country it just allows you to call another country while her in the U.S.
When I go to Italy I use a cell phone that I purchased there a few years ago. The way their phones work is you put money on the sim card...kind of like a Boost Mobile phone. Also...when you receive a phone call you don't pay anything. They also have phone cards that you can purchase for pretty cheap. You get the best rate when you call from a land line but they also work on pay phones.

I think I am just leaving my itinerary with my family with the names and #s of the hotels I will be at just in case of an emergency. I am looking forward to being unreachable for the most part though.

call your provider bc i think antigua might be accesible i know most of the islands in the caribean are to at&t and sprint. you can also buy a calling card when you get to antigua.
email works also - most hotels have access to internet

you should also be able to give your immediate family the resort information or wherever you are going to be and have them contact you in case of an emergency as well
