cell phones and weddings

cell phones and weddings

How did you ask, request or remind your guests to turn off their cell pones? Did you require this only for your ceremony or for the dinner/reception as well. One would think people would have some common decency, but amazement at the lack of this never ends. Can you ask guests who are parents (who's kids are not with them) not to have their cell phones on or is that sticking your neck out too far? Again, in those cases can you still require they be off for the ceremony? My ceremony is only a half hour... Sheesh, how did our society survive without a telephone strapped to the ear.

right before the ceremony started, the officiant made an announcement that went sort of:

'To respect the bride and groom and the special meaning of this event, they ask that you please turn off all cell phones and pagers at this time.'

for the reception, i figured most ppl just kept it off or on vibrate and i didn't hear anything at all during speeches or anything

We put a note in our programs saying something like, 'Please turn off all cell phones during the ceremony.'

I did find out that a friend of mine was texting another friend of his during the reception. I thought even that was rude but I think that the person who first told me wanted me to get upset.

For the ceremony usually the officiant will make an announcement in the beginning.

For the reception, honestly, i dont think you really can or should ask guests to turn off their cell phones. Its not like their in a church or something....we're talking a 5 hour event. They should be allowed to use their cell phones if they want to. I've had mine on at receptions before (I just go outside to talk if i need to) and I have to say, if someone told me I couldnt use it or have it on....I'd be PI$$ED

I think it is appropriate to ask people to turn them off during the ceremony, but not at the reception. I would hope that most people would put them on silent or vibrate at the reception, but think I may be hoping for too much…

I agree that the proper thing is for guests to turn off the ringers on their cells during the ceremony. For me, I'm getting married in a church and I feel it's inappropriate to let it ring in there, JMO. Maybe the officiant can make an announcement or you can put something in your program.

However, during the reception??? I don't see why people shouldn't be able to use their cells during an event. I mean, they shouldn't use them during the more quiet times like the dinner part, but why would you be upset if someone got a quick phone call or had to make a phone call? Or if they were texting? I mean, if they were on the phone or texting all night I can understand, but not to use them at all? I don't think that's too reasonable. Again, JMO

IMHO use of a cell phone is completely rude during the ceremony whether it is at the church, the hall or wherever . . . it is a matter of respect. But during the reception, other than during dinner or toasting I don't see how it is completely rude especially considering cell phone etiquette nowadays I probably wouldn't do it myself unless it was an emergency and even then I would step out, but I wouldn't be completely put off if i saw it in my presence during the party/social time.

I have two girlfriends of mine who were so nice as to be willing to help give out programs and our wedding bubbles. I'm going to ask them to quickly, politely & quietly request that guest turn off their cell phones.

I was at another wedding last weekend and just as another poster said, the Officient told everyone to turn their phones off before the ceremony started. Nothing like a cell phone ringing should interrupt the ceremony.

i think it's so ridiculous to have to ask people to do this - particularly if someone's having it in a church or other religious place. i never thought of having to do this, but unfortunately, sometimes you have to in this day and age....in some ways i don't want to remind ppl b/c they should know... hmm....all the ideas mentioned above are good i think.
