I replied on NWR
it's in the middle of the island - neither shore, western suffolk, I think north of lake ronkonkoma, south of south setauket, kind of near lake grove and selden.
ok not great schools, safe area, great library, no town, lots of traffic, no train station.
If I get a job on LI we are going to look there.

Re: Centereach: Repost from NWR
I live in Centereach so do Julz33 and Kelly4. I bought my house and moved in in June!
I really like the area a lot. I think its perfect for a young couple especially if you both work because it doesnt take more than 5 minutes to get to a grocery store, home depot, fast food of any kind, etc. And I liek that its so centrally located near major transportation! There is no RR but its only about 15 minutes for Ronkonkoma. LIE is close, etc.
If you have any specific questions, ask away!

Re: Centereach: Repost from NWR
DH and I grew up in Centereach and now live in Lake Ronkonkoma. When we were house hunting we were looking in Centereach. We're both products of Middle Country SD and we both did very well, although I hear the quality of the high schools (Centereach and Newfield) these days goes through it's good and bad phases. If you have questions about a specific area or street let me know.

Re: Centereach: Repost from NWR
My grandparents, aunt and uncle and cousins have lived there for years. I like the area a lot. If we didnt have a house already I would look there because its one of the few places on LI you can still get a decent price on a house.
There was also a big article in Newsday a few wks ago about Centereach and how the area is changing a lot (for the good) because a lot of young couples are moving in and fixing up their houses and improving the value of the area, etc.

How are the taxes? Are they outrageous like everywhere else?

Re: Centereach: Repost from NWR
Middle Country schools arent that great. But they arent the worst either. They seem pretty mid range. We live north of MC rd and I personally like the areas North better than South.
Pretty much every town had 'good' and 'bad' areas.
As far as taxes, ours are about $5800 but we have 2 extensions on our house that bring it up. Our neighbors are around 5K. When we were looking for a house I was looking for my taxes to be under $6K which they are, that to me, by LI standards was reasonable. Currently there are 4 houses in my neighborhood up for sale. Its seems to be the big changing over of the neighborhood, a lot of older couples downsizing or moving out of town

Re: Centereach: Repost from NWR
Taxes arent crazy, but it is Long Island. It also depends on the age of the home, newer home = higher taxes.
