Centerpieces

Centerpieces

I'm not really into flowers, so I wanted to do something different for centerpieces. I came across the idea of having live beta fish centerpieces.

If I were to do it, I would basically be putting them in 11x 4 inch square vases, with an aquatic plant and top with floating candle.

I did some research and beta's are pretty resilient to tough living conditions and are less dirty than goldfish. I would also have to use distilled or treated water for the vases so that there is no chlorine in the water.

My question is if I can arrange for someone to set this up the day of the wedding, do you think its a nice idea? Has anyone ever used goldfish or bettafish for their centerpiece before?

**I was also thinking about alternating tables, having half with bettafish and the other half with something else (like a submerged flower), that way, I would only have to find a home 8-10 betta fish instead of 20 betta fish after the wedding is over.

Beta fish cannot be put in the same centerpiece, they will fight. I think its a cute idea but I would also have instructions for the people who want to take the fish home with them so they know how to take care of them. I would ask your florist if they can put the fish in the centerpieces when they do set up.

I know of some one who went to a wedding were there had a beta fish as a centerpeice...she loved it and was excited to take home the fish at the end of the night. I personaly hate fish so it is really a matter or what you want. . . Im sure there is some one who sets up these thing or could you make this a DIY?

I think that's a really cool idea. For my birthday one year i got a square vase that was subdivided into compartments...one side of the vase had the flowers and the other side was a beta fish. I think alternating tables is a good idea. It might be hard to find 20 ppl to take it home...but im sure you can find 10-12.

good luck

im also thinking of not doing floral cp but doing candelabras...pics in my album if your interested in that idea as well.

Thanks, I guess I would just pray none of the fish die. But I am still playing around with ideas. The candlebras are a good idea.

There used to be a girl on here who did fish bowl centerpieces and they looked really cool IMO, she isn't on here anymore though.

Re: Centerpieces

So far I just know that Beta Fish have better chance of surviving through the night than goldfish. They don't poop as much. (the reason some fish die in a bowl is from ammonia build up from their waste, which I did not know at first)

Water should be treated to remove chlorine from tap water and should be at room temperature before putting the fish in. ( I heard you just need a few drops of the treatment and it is cheap at pet stores)

My BM said if I show the maitre d how to set them up they can prepare everything.

I think I am going to have about 10 arrangements with the betta fish in the water and the other 10 with a submerged rose and alternate tables. I also think I may have 2 back up vases with the submerged flowers on hand so the maitre d can substitute a table on the chance we do lose a fish or two. ( i do not want people staring at dead fish). I doubt that will happen, but I would feel better with some kind of back up.

Thanks for the feedback, I think I might go for it.

What about doing a tall trumpet vase with goldfish or beta fish and rocks with a couple callas, placed in a small sandbox with sand dollars and shells?

very cool idea! You should probably get a friend or a DOC to set it up though...
