ceremony ideas

Hi everyone! I'm new to the board, but hoping you guys can help. My FH and I were raised catholic, but have decided for many reasons not to be married in the catholic church. However, we don't want a civil ceremony. Can anyone make suggestion for a non-catholic, but still spritual ceremony? We are not atheist, so some kind of blessing would be great. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: ceremony ideas

You might want to try an Ethical Culture ceremony. (They are called the Society for Ethical Culture). There's one in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Nassau County. One of their ministers married my friend and they mention God without being aligned with any one religion. It was really nice.

I also was raised catholic. My fiance is protestant. We are both divorced. I had an annulment, however he hasn't and the church won't recognize our union.

We decided to go with a friend who was an ordained Catholic Priest who left the priesthood to marry and have a family. He is licensed by the state of NY and also can perform a catholic ceremony (the rc church won;t recognize). If you want his info....forum mail me

Re: ceremony ideas

Can you have a Catholic priest marry you at your reception site?

Re: ceremony ideas

Some how I don't think so, although I don't know for sure. I don't think the priests are allowed to marry outside the church setting. Does anyone know? Also, how do I register on the '04 site?
Thanks everyone!

DH and I are inter-faith, but we definitely wanted a spiritual wedding that incorporated blessings, 'God', etc. So, we used Rev. April from Church of the Ancient Ways, who advertises here. She was able to work with exactly what we wanted, she writes vows beautifully, and will do whatever you want. It was a very powerful ceremony. I think you can read some of the vows on her website. A few other brides here have used her too.

Re: ceremony ideas

you would have to actually get special dispensation from the bishop. They don't like to do it though. One reason I read about it that the church is a public place where someone could come to your wedding and announce that they know of a reason why you are not worthy etc. (they couldn't just show up in your back yard to do this) That is why you have to place the banns of marriage in the bulletin or paper. This is what I have been told.

My problem is the divorce issue that they wouldn't marry us in or out of the church. I won't put my personal opinion on the subject in writing here....you might see lightening strike

Re: ceremony ideas

Dh and I had a 'civil' ceremony...while there was no blessing or any reference to religion (we are both atheists) we did have a few nice 'passages' and a rose ceremony...

FM me with email and I will send it to you if you want...
