Ceremony Music: DJ vs Musical Instrument Player

Ceremony Music: DJ vs Musical Instrument Player

Hi Ladies!
I've been throwing around in my head whether we should hire some kind of musical instrument player for the ceremony portion or just use the DJ.

What are some average quotes you have gotten for ceremony music from a musical instrument player? From whom?

I thought I saw floating around somewhere a thread that had a whole bunch of music school listings on Long island. That's what I'm thinking I will do because it'll probably be cheaper.

Thanks!

I believe that the vintage string quartet is $700 for an hour. I am using a sting quartet too and I feel that it can add alot to the feel of the ceremony.

We're thinking of asking our DJ to set something up... but I can't visualize it. Almost every wedding I've attended had a pianist or violinist. I don't recall a DJ.

Nina,
I know what you mean! I've only been to one wedding that actually had a ceremony and it was a church so there was a organist.

I just feel like the ceremony should be softer, classier, elegant. Unless the DJ's sound system is amazing it just seems like it might be too 'rough' or harsh for the ceremony. Ideally I would love a musician or a string duo for the ceremony.
I'm less concerned about the cocktail hour but it would be nice too but I worry about how the sound would carry through the spaces (the cocktail hour will flow between indoor and outdoor).

I'm definitely exploring the option so it all depends on $$$.

We're using an acoustic guitarist for the ceremony and CH, I believe it came out to $300 (we got them through our DJ).

I love the idea of a musical instrument for the ceremony. But fiance is sorta against it unless it is spectacularly affordable. Ilana who's your DJ? I was thinking of an acoustic guitarist as well.

For those that are having a musician for the ceremony is it outdoors and in the same place as the reception?

We're also worried logistically how it would all worked out. We're hoping to have the cocktail hour flow indoors and outdoors. So I'm not sure how the sound would work this way with a musician. Would s/he have some sort of 'mic' near the instrument which would then just carry through the speakers?
