Ceremony Music Question

So pretty much all that is left to do with the church is select our ceremony music and although I have time for this, I want to do it soon b/c then we can complete our programs...FH has been working on them Anyway, my question is, for those getting married in church, or otherwise, what selections have you chosen or plan on choosing? Do they limit you and give you ones you must choose from? TIA

Ooo I'm a church singer! Ask me any questions and I'm sure I can answer them!

I'm picking all non-traditional music (Christian Contemporary) b/c I work there, but I can definitely tell you what most ppl pick!!

yes it was in church, and the only time they didn't like my music was for the unity candle... I wanted a moment like this ... and they wouldn't let me.. we ended up using 'only god could love you more', which was supposed to be sung but she wound up sick.

Re: Ceremony Music Question

Some churches do not allow certain songs, others give free reign. Just ask ahead of time and then you should be all set

What is Christian Contemporary music? Can you give examples? I would love to do non traditional but I am clueless on things like that.

I'm having the string quartet play all the movements from Vivaldi's Four Seasons while guests are being seated. I'm not sure what the processional music or my entrance music will be yet.

Sure! I sing at St Marys in East Islip. Are you having a Mass or a ceremony? Usually at either the procession and recession are instrumental. You can have different music for the BP, or you can all come into the same music. A lot of ppl choose Canon in D for the BP and then the Bridal Chorus (Here comes the bride) for the bride... but you could also choose Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring, Ode to Joy. I can't really think of any other super popular ones. My church has a gathering song after the procession but I don't think mosts churches do this. Usually the first 'sung' piece of music would be the responsorial psalm. I'm using one called 'Let All Praise the name of the Lord' which is upbeat. YOu could choose 'I have Loved you' 'Taste and See' or pretty much any setting of a wedding psalm. I've heard 'I have Loved you' at a ton of Catholic Weddings. Then the Gospel Acclamation comes next, which is likely the Celtic, but you won't have to pick this. The church will do wahtever they normally do. You'll have to pick 3 main songs if you're having a Mass 1) an Offertory song 2) a Communion song 3) Song during the candle lighting. Generally the Communion song will be something 'Bread and Wine'-ish. Your church will give you choices. If you pick the Ave Maria that is usually sung during the Candle lighting, but some churchs will let you do it during the offertory (when they bring up the gifts to the altar) Some other popular choices for these times are 'Where there is Love' which is a setting of the Corinthians reading which I'm SURE you know (Love is Patient, Love is Kind...) and MY favorite, and what I am having is called 'Wherever you go' which is an arrangement of an Old Testament reading. Some ppl also have 'The Wedding Song' at the candle or offertory, which is pretty too. I wish I could sing a line or two from all of these so you could hear them! When you meet with your Music Director I'm sure they'll play you some of the songs!

As for Christian Contemporary music, I sing in a young adult choir, so we sing a lot of newer arrangements of Christian music. Sort of along the lines of 'I can only Imagine' They're all really upbeat and so I want my ceremony to sound up and happy!

Re: Ceremony Music Question

Thanks ladies!!
I was at church tonight and my mind wandered to my church music. I think I want Ave Maria for when we present the flowers to Mary. I also think I want 'All Good Gifts' for something, but I don't know what it's appropriate for. Mima...what do you think?

I also love the 'St. Francis' Prayer'

Both would be appropriate Offertory songs. Also girls, if you have songs that you want played and you can't fit into your ceremony, you can have a few preludes before the wedding... Usually the organist plays anyway, so if you want some sung preludes you can have that.

LOL yeah a little. But maybe during the reception?? Some parishes dont allow patriotic music b/c they say 'the church is universal, not just America' but other parishes DO allow it. Personally, I think that the ceremony is about YOU!!! Leave America for later in the evening.
