Ceremony Q !

Ceremony Q !

I have noticed something that I don't understand!

At Jewish wedding ceremonies, the bride is usually on the cantor's left and the groom is on the right. At Catholic/Christian ceremonies I have noticed that it is usually the reverse.

Does anyone know the significance of these differences? I grew up in a Catholic/Jewish home and want to have a mix of traditions in the ceremony. But I have always wondered, is there a reason for the bride and groom being on particular sides for their nuptials?

TIA!

Re: Ceremony Q !

In jewish ceremonies the bride always stands on the grooms right side. Which youre right would be the rabbis or cantors left side if your looking at it from his view. The brides guests also sit on the right side of the room and the grooms sit on the left. The position of the bride on the right side of the groom is based on an interpretation of a verse in the Psalms. 'The queen stands on your right hand in fine gold of Ophir.' In Jewish tradition the bride is a queen, and the groom a king.

Thanks! I'm still not sure about why the Catholic tradition has it differently... but oh well. At least I know a bit more!
