I was wondering, does the officiant have to ask the guest of the wedding during the ceremony, 'if anyone feels this couple should not be joined, speak now or forever hold your peace.' I really hate the very idea of it. Is it required by law or can I insist it not be said? Please let me know.

Re: Ceremony question...
I'm pretty sure I've been to weddings where they didn't say that... I hadn't given it much thought - want to ask my Deacon about that too.

I don't think they have to say it. In fact, I can't remember it ever being said at any wedding I've been at. Talk to your officiant, but I really think there just has to be an exchange of 'I do's, witnesses and a license.

Re: Ceremony question...
I asked our officiant about this and she said it's rare that it's said anymore.

Re: Ceremony question...
It is up to the bride and groom....it is not a law. We are not doing this.

Re: Ceremony question...
I'm pretty sure this was just an old tradition, to prevent incestual marriage. Maybe they still do it in West Virginia
Seriously- Catholic ceremonies I beleive cover this by announcing your union for a week or so befor ethe wedding, so that members of the community can protest before hand.

Re: Ceremony question...
I haven't hear that said at any of my friends weddings. All of my friends have gotten married at Catholic churches so I don't know if that makes a difference.
