are they absolutely necessary for the wedding? Ive been searching on the web for chair covers and they are very expensive..are they necessary or can the chairs be left without them?

I've been going back and forth about this. In my RH the chairs are brand new and beautiful. Everyone else tells me that they aren't necessary, but I do love the white look that chair covers provide.

I don't think so. I don't plan on using them. The chairs that I saw were fine. If you hate the chairs or if they just don't go with your color scheme then I would use them. Check the condition of the chairs too, you definitely don't want any rips or tears. It's up to how you want the overall look to be.
Some places already have them, they just charge you for them per chair. I went to one place that charged $3 per chair and it wasn't anything special. It may not sound like much, but they add up.

exactly! nothing is a must unless thats what YOU want for ur day....there are soooooo many things that brides do that others might think are ridiculous or money not well spent but its up to u to decide what looks good in ur rh and if thats worth it for u to get.....im using chaircovers bc i feel the room looks sooooooooo much better....it adds a touch of class and elegance
