Change of Career

Change of Career

So ladies, as a bunch of you already know, I am a first year medical student. I worked my butt of to get where I am today, and I cried when I received my first medical school acceptance. Well my first year was more than turbulent. I had my share of difficult times (was hospitalized for a recurring rib injury, came down with the swine flu, and a dear friend of mine and of my family's was killed in a car accident early in the morning on Halloween at the young age of 27 years) and some good times. But overall, I hated my med school experience. Aside from these unavoidable and tragic circumstances, the study load I received was more than anyone could imagine. I found myself studying every minute of the day, living on an average of 5 hours of sleep, not having the time to clean my apartment, do some decent grocery shopping, watch a tv show or even call a friend. Whenever FH came to visit, he cooked, cleaned, did my shopping, and I studied. Needless to say, I was miserable.

Although I ultimately have been doing well at school, I have thought long and hard about this but have made the decision to leave medicine. I realize that this is not the type of life I want to lead. Medical school has taught me a great deal of things, but one of those things is that it just is not for me. After considering this for months, I am thrilled with my decision.

I have always had a passion for real estate development, as this is what my family does, and so I decided to research real estate degrees. I applied for a Masters of Real Estate at Georgetown University, and was accepted! FH and I are now apartment hunting and job hunting for him, and we are so excited to embark on this new journey together. I feel a tremendous amount of relief and happiness and am so excited to become a part of the Georgetown community.

Good for you.... I wish I had decided firmly after the first semester or first year that law school was not for me. I would have wasted that year, but instead now I've spent 3 years working toward a career that I don't even want anymore. It sounds like you'll be much happier on your new career path. And better to make the decision now than a couple of years from now! Good luck!!

Thank you so much!! I agree - I am fortunate enough that my parents paid for my first year (they offered to pay for all schooling up until marriage) so I have no school debt, but had I stayed, I'd be looking at being in hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt so yes, better to find this out early on!!

I'm so sorry you are unhappy in your schooling. I think you said you're in law school? My sister graduated from law school, too. I hope you at least find happiness in the type of law you ultimately practice!

Congrats on making the right decision for you!!! That's great news!

While I was in law school I saw so many people suffering as they realized it wasn't for them. I am glad I didn't have that experience, but I saw how difficult and draining it was on them. Good for you for figuring it out sooner rather than later!

good for you!

if i may just say... while i completely respect ANYONE in the medical profession.

i could NEVER be a doctor. i mean, i'm an idiot with math and science and could never be smart enough to be a doctor. but besides that...

it really is an attrocious lifestyle for some of them.

i commend you on making a very hard decision that i'm sure will proove to be great for you and FH's relationship and your relationship with any future children if you choose to have them.

Congrats on making the right decision for yourself. It takes a lot of courage to go in a different direction after knowing how much time and energy you spent on something else. Hope everything works out for you and you are happy with your new career path.
