Most of it you have to do in person (yes, this means going to the DMV ). You also have to go to your local social security office with the marriage certificate. I'm not sure yet about credit cards, but as soon as I find out--I'll let ya know.

Try to search on the newlywed board---maybe they have this info already posted???

Re: Changing Last Name

Here's a checklist I found in Premier Bride:

Auto Registration
Bank Accounts
Car Insurance
Credit Cards
Credit Reporting Agency
Deeds
Doctor/Dental Records
Driver's License
Employee Records
IRS
Life Insurance Policy
Memberships
Passport
Post Office
Property Title
Savings Accounts
Social Security
Stock Certificates
Voter Registration
Will

It also says that a request should be made for a seperate credit history to be maintained under the bride's maiden name and to keep one or two credit cards under your maiden name to maintain a credit rating.

Hope this helps.

I used the name change kit and found it very helpful. Don't forget you also need to change your title and your registration on your car. you need to bring the original title with you.

Start with Social Security and then work from there.

Credit Cards and some other institutions just need a written or verbal notice from you (bank institutions, doctors office, etc, etc...)

DMV - change your license, registration & title

About going to the DMV, you must bring your ORIGINAL marriage license. Someone told me to bring a copy, but I brought the original also. And you have to take a new picture. The guy told us that they compare the one they have on file with the new one to make sure its the same person. I thought that was very smart of them

Do you really have to change your car title and registration if you aren't combining your insurance? FH and I both have 2 vehicles each and don't need the 'multiple car discount'. I'd rather not put my truck under his name or even his last name at this point.
