Changing last name

I posted this on the newlyweds board, but is seems there is some confusion. What are the correct steps to doing this? Do I need to go to social security first and then the DMV and then I can just changr everything else??? Help

Re: Changing last name

I do believe that is the order. That is what all my girlfriends said to do.
I still need to do it.
But yes SS office first and the DMV. Everything else follows.
If you find out anything else please let me know.
Thanks.
Good luck.

You don't need to go to the SS office first. The DMV doesn't ask for your SS card. While you need to show a photo ID at the SS office, it shouldn't matter whether you have you old or new last name on the ID b/c the marriage certificate has both names. The certificate, not your drivers license, is the proof of identity required to change your name on your SS card.

I'm just curious, but what if you change your name on the marriage license but never change it on your SS or DL, what would happen if anything?

I went to SS office first. They give you a piece of paper stating the name change. When you go to DMV they ask for this paper, for proof that you changed it.

I was told by many people that you have to go to the SS office first. And that SS is the only ones that can legal change your name, therefore all the other things can be changed.

You will need your marriage certificate with you for this.

You do not need to go to SS office first. I went to DMV first the only thing they asked for is your marriage license and ID. When I went to the SS office they asked for marriage license and ID as well. I was told when you don't change your SS card then you will get into problems with the IRS. My boss told me this because she was paying taxes under her new name but never changed her SS card and when it came to filing for her taxes she had some problems.

Why would you change your name on your marriage license if you have no intention of changing it legally? If you change your mind regarding your last name after you get the license, I don't think anything would happen. Just to be sure, I'd ask someone at the clerk's office when you apply for a marriage license.

I just went for my marriage license yesterday and the clerk told me that I can still hyphenate if I decide to at DMV -- I put that I would be taking FH's name on the marriage license, but after talking about it with him, I may hyphenate my name.

Good luck!!!

Re: Changing last name

while you're waiting for your new SS card to come in the mail, do you sign things with your new last name? What about on a credit card? If i'm waiting for a new one to come in the mail, I'm assuming i'd use the old one with my maiden name and sign my maiden name , right?
