Changing name..

I know there are prob. a bunch of posts re: this but does anyone have one that has the 411 on changing name and where to go and who to see?

honestly---the easiest thing is go to either SS first or DMV--i found DMV first is best. you just bring your marriage certificate and the driver's licens app with you and do it that way. either way -- you have to wait a few weeks for the new license/SS card....so i'd go for DMV first so you'll have the new license in hand when you go to SS.

you'll find that most of your credit cards don't even need to see the marriage certificate--you can do it over the phone.

i think its best in this order:

DMV & Registrations
Credit Cards
Bank Accounts
any long term installment payments such as car loan, student loans, etc.
SS

Here's what I did I hope it helps!

I went to the DMV closest to me (they're no fun either way ) Just make sure you bring everything for your car and license- title, reg, new ins card, old license and of course your marriage cert.

SS- I went to the office in Melville, (its just off RT 100 behind Cirellos Restaurant in a blue glass building) I brought my new DL and marraige cert and was out in lest than 20 min.

CC- I just called and told them no proof needed

Cable- still haven't done they want so much stuff and I don't have the time right now.

work- biggest pain in the a$$. I needed to wait till I got my new DL, marriage cert, AND SS Card before I could do anything

I still haven't done my passport, but I have no where right now so its ok

ETA: I downloaded all the forms for SS andthe DMV off their websites and filled them out before I went, it helped save a little time.

I did the same thing -- I also went to DMV and the SS office on the same day. The DMV in Huntington was so quick I was in and out in 20 minutes there was nobody there. Same thing with the SS office in Huntington

Credit cards -- did them over the phone -- they were so easy.

Still have to go and change my name at the bank and on bills.
