My FH is divorced...and he wants me to keep my last name for anything financial...bank accounts, mortgage (I owned a house before I met him), etc. However...I don't know how this works. When I file tax returns...do I then file as single? What about when I sell this house to buy a new one...do I do that as single also? He doesn't want his name on anything...ever. His credit is ruined for life...and I don't want his bad credit to ruin my good credit. What do I have to change...my drivers license, but not my social security? I'm so confused...Any advice? Thanks.

Re: Changing your name
There is no legal requirement to change your name once you are married. File everything as a married person it should be fine, you may(not 100% sure) just have to provide a marriage certificate, like when you add your husband as your dependent for health insurance.
Good Luck

Re: Changing your name
love combining my CPA and wedding skills!!!
the key to all this is consistency!! if you do not legally change your name, then all documents must be filed with your maiden name. you can still file a 'Married Filing Joint' tax return, just ensure that you put your maiden name on it. the IRS database compares returns to the Social Security database, and if your name and # do not match exactly, it will bounce back a notice - not a huge deal, but people tend to freak when they get a letter from the IRS.
