Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

anyone see it yet?

comments and concerns???

I loved it but Im not a huge fan of the original. Johnny Depp was weird and funny and sinister all in one. He was fabulous---'MUMBLER!!!!'

I liked how true it was to the book but still has Burton elements. The boat ride still scared me. Freddie Highmore was so wholesome!

MMMM...Johnny goodness!

I'm seeing it tomorrow. FH has been studying hard for the bar exam, so it's like a big night out! I hope it's good, but I'll be so excited to spend time with him, I'll be fine either way!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the original!!! It was one of those movies that I could watch over and over!

However, the new one REALLY disappointed me! A lot of the stuff was really WEIRD (to say the least) FH looked at me at least 10 times throughout the movie with a serious looks of confusion/annoyance on his face! (He HATED IT) Johnny Depp was scary too...especially with the dancing dolls that caught fire!!!

IMO it wasn't all I thought it was going to be, but it did make me want go home and enjoy the original all over again!!!

I can't wait to see this. Dahl was disappointed with the casting of the original film (he never wanted Gene Wilder in it; can you believe that?) and I'm curious as to how this turned out with Burton directing it.

Oh, the horror! The horror! Most of that movie the thought going through my head was ***!! Johnny Depp did an excellent job of being awkward and creepy. But Willy Wonka is supposed to be magical and mystical, NOT creepy. And the music...don't get me started... So sad to ruin such a good story.

ETA: W T F got bleeped out. I thought that was the nice version of those words

wow....guess Im in the minority here.

Just to poll...how many who saw the movie actually read the book?

The thing for me is the new movie is exactly like the book and Gene Wilder version isnt.

Re: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

I read the book YEARS ago. The book was called 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and in 1971, the movie was called 'Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory'. Being a fan of Roald Dahl books, I cannot imagine that he would have been pleased with the casting choice of Johnny Depp looking so freakishly gothic as he led children through a mystical journey of edible delights. I'll be honest with you, I haven't seen the newer movie yet, but the book and its sequel 'Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator' were equally creepy when you read them. Does anyone remember how doped up Lewis Carroll must have been when he wrote 'Alice in Wonderland' - everyone knew he was. The original 'Willie Wonka...' movie was weird too. So many hidden (and not hidden) nuances of weird behaviors. If you were able to look past the cool candy and chocolate, it wasn't exactly 'kid friendly'. The boat scene freaked me out for a long time. And Slugworth? Lets not go there.

I saw this last night with FH. Being a HUGE fan of the original, I already knew how different this version would be..with Tim Burtons influence of course.

While i thought the background of Charlie Buckets family was great and detailed...there was so much that disappointed me. The entire factory scenes to be honest...Johnny Depp, although I love him, was a creepy/cold/psychotic wonka...not the slightly off/maniacal and witty Wonka that Gene Wilder played. I really did find Gene Wilders character to be truer to the books Wonka than Depp. The main reason being that it seemed Willy Wonka did have a love for children and the excitement behind chocolate/fantasy for kids that Depp did NOT have at all. He was a cold, almost subhuman character and it really really bothered me.

In the end though I thought it was like seeing two completely different movies so I didn't feel i was 'cheating on the original' by seeing the new one, lol. Worth seeing but too creepy for me!

Re: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

I wrote my impressions on another page, but I don't think Gene Wilder OR Johnny Depp make a true to the book Willy. I think Wilder was MUCH too benign, and Depp was just a tad too creepy. But anyway I loved the movie and I thought the oompa loompa songs were a huge highlight. I love that they used the actual lyrics from the book.
