You can get a cake from them through 2 backeries: Black Forest or VillaBella. Each place has a book with a couple of cakes to choose from. You can bring pictures with you, and if it's something similar to one of their choices, they probably won't charge you extra. If it's more complicated, they will charge you the amount that isn't covered by CLM (no one would ever tell me what this amount was). You can bring in a cake from an outside bakery at no expense to you from CLM, but they will not give you the money back they cover for the cake if you go through them.

Re: Chateau La Mer Brides Re: Cakes?
Well, Black Forest seemed like the place to go to and when I met with the baker, everything seemed perfect. But, like I said in my review, my cake was really lopsided and one of the dowels was sticking through the top layer (which you can see in the proofs because they took picture of the cake before they tried to cover it with the cake topper).
VillaBella was really frustrating to work with because I went down there when I had an appointment and yet there was no baker there to help me. I called many times in the next 3 weeks and went down there again, and they still couldn't give me a quote by then. Also, the family is right off the boat Italian and the woman was extremely difficult to communicate with.
Two very different stiles. BF is big and does a lot of bigger business. VB is more of a small mom and pop type place. There were maybe 8 cakes or so to choose from in the BF book and a couple in the VB book. Be prepared with something before you go in--some pictures, a general idea. Think about having your florist put fresh flowers on a plain cake maybe if you don't really like you choices, but don't want to spend the extra on a different cake. I don't see why you couldn't even put silk flowers from Michaels on there (unless they consider that a health hazard, but hey, your putting a cake topper and dirty fresh flowers on anyway, right?).
I think you're supposed to order the cake 4 weeks before the wedding, but you could always go and look around now. If you do go to BF, ask to meet specifically with Tom, cause the lady that helped us the first time wasn't even a baker and didn't know what they could and couldn't do and was a bit unfriendly.

Thanks for the tips!!!! Our March trip was supposed to be our last NY trip (FI is in a band so hard to get up there) but we are now planning a mid May one...that is a like 6 weeks before the wedding so hopefully they'll let us work on it then!
