Checkout yahoo.com right now

If you go to yahoo.com right now, one of the headings is about how much you should give as a gift at a wedding. Please take a look at the answers. I am absolutely in shock what people are saying is an appropriate gift. These people must live in another century or some bumble**** town.

My bad...I didnt read the entire article..

$50 bucks..geez..how insulting...

ETA: I think a $50 gift is acceptable if you dont go to the wedding..but if you do it should be more then that...

I can believe it because weddings are completely different in NY than in most parts of the country - The way things are done in larger cities of America are much more exquisite than smaller areas

ditto. i think we sometimes forget that outside NYC and LI--weddings are a whole different WORLD. money is usually not given...registry items are...and a lot of times ppl think its tacky & impersonal to give $$ at a wedding. we're so used to the NY way, that anything else sounds bad to us.

I am personally not a LI or NYC girl, I stumbled on this site doing a search and liked you girls and all of your advice so I stayed and got an account, anyways I am from a small town in Kentucky and I know that here $150 - $200 is a whole lot. I am sure that most people that come to my wedding will spend like $50 on my wedding gift. But also weddings here are a lot cheaper, the food at the reception is less than $50 a person (but we are just doing finger foods since it is in between lunch and dinner). So while I understnad your guys shock I also understnad not spending a lot on a gift.

Re: Checkout yahoo.com right now

Our guests gave money and the general amount was $100. My mother paid for the wedding and reception and gave us $1500 as a gift along with a 1yr custom maid membership. They come 1x a month and clean the house. She has had them for years and we had them at the last house, but just can't afford it right now. My father gave a $1000 visa gift card and paid for the dinner reception. His parents gave $500 check. This is above and beyond for our town, but I admit I am pretty spoiled and my family LOVES Joe. Where we're from the amounts they are talking about are very typical, but in perspective.......our October wedding with 130 ppl, full dinner menue, openbar 3/ 7 prem liq, and 2 kegs, cake, live band, limo's, photographer, hair and make-up came to aboute $5000. Dinner was $13.95 a plate and they are very well known with in a 100 mile radius. Sounds a little diffrent now huh

NY is notorious for having expensive weddings and recieveing cash gifts but then again ive been to two wedding in Los Angeles and they were also very 'NY style' weddings where all the guests gave cash gifts.

Thanks for your input and welcome to the boards Where in Kentucky are you from? (I've traveled quite a bit and have been to Kentucky several times)

ETA: My DH is from upstate and the weddings up there are very different as well. He was shocked at the amount of cash gifts we recieved.

Yeah those responses are ridiculous for NY (since our weddings cost us our whole life savings), but probably not so bad in other places.

I live in CT, but all of my family will be comming from Kansas and the FH is from Canada, we aren't getting our hopes up on gifts. lol

I would be happy with 50 bucks per person, half of it will be Canadian money which is worth less!!

I'm from Saratoga County and the average price per plate up here is about $75. Generally in this part of the state people give gifts at a shower and cash at the wedding. I also found this site doing a search (for wedding hair and OMG all the pictures and ideas I have found here are awesome!!!!) and I liked what you guys have to say so I decided to stick around :)

I wouldn't be insulted or upset if a guest gave us nothing. Everyone's circumstancs are different - my sister and her DH recently bought a house, just had a baby and are now trying to live on one income - I would be upset if she tried to give me $100 because I know she needs it. FH and I invited people to our wedding because we care about them and we want to share a very special day with them. We don't want to be paid back for what we spend on the day.

Thank you! I think sometimes people loose sight of what a wedding is. It's not about how much money your guests give you, it's about the people you love being there for your special day. DH and I had several friends who gave us very small gifts because of their limited incomes.

I am from Ashland, it is relatively small, located in eastern KY. It is at the point where KY, OH and WV meet.

Ditto.. $50 -$100 bucks is totally acceptable. Anything more would be outrageous.
I had NO idea the type of gifts people give out there before reading some boards. It blows me away!!

Frankly... when I got married many moons ago.. LOL.. I never even thought for a minute that a gift should be the equivalent plus some.. of what it cost to have the guest there.
I mean.. come on. Its MY choice to have a large expensive wedding and I am honored to have my friends and family there because I want to share my day and for doing so ... I will pay to have them there. If they can only afford $50 bucks .. or even less for a gift.. but will still part of my day.. I will be fine with that.
I felt the same about the expenses of the bridal party --- why should they have to pay to stand by me when IM the one getting married?

Just my .02 cents... and I know I think way different then most..LOL!!!
So I hope I dont offend anyone with my point of view.
